Is it a complement or a putdown?

I don't like the name, for me its a putdown.

I have a friend who's Mom calls her sisters hubby Bubba and my friend got mad thinking it was a nice name to be called so I thought I would ask GFY.

my daughter calls her brother bubba always has probably always will.. In this case I think it's cute.

Im sure some mis-guided people that dont really know much would call it derogatory - but to most it is just someones name - commonly used.
A good example would be the famous rapper from Georgia Bubba Sparxxx.

She'll be happy to see this.

That's what I call my 11 month old son, but I never thought of it as a put down. He's just so cute...he looks like a Bubba! The fact that he's 11 mo and wears 24 mo clothes makes the nick appropriate.

An insult: either a comment about your size/weight or racist stereotypical remark.

yeah, I would call your general mouth breathing slacker 'Bubba', and refer to a normal (but large) man as Big Guy, Killer, Ace, Slick, etc etc

Bubba, as a generic greeting, just implies an overall lack of intelligence, style, and importance. But, this could very well be regional. For all I know, it's a nickname filled with love and genuine happiness down south, or elsewhere.

There was a guy I knew who called himself Bubba. He used to wear a huge dog collar around his neck and smash beer cans on his forehead. I'd say it's a putdown. lol
