HP Set To Lay Off 14,500 People

It is finally official and will be announced publically at 5:45 AM Pacific time. HP is laying off 14,500 full time employees over the next six quarters. That equates to about 10% of its full time staff and will equate to an annual savings of $1.9 billion.

First of all the savings will start in 2007. Second, 14.500 employees need computers, cars, whatever they get as extra. Also they need less space now, so rent/property can be cheaper etc etc. They need less rooms cleaned, so that gets cheaper etc etc. When you have employees, it's not only salary what they cost...

For each employee they have not only eliminated that persons salary, but also the entire cost of having that employee - office space, any and all equipment used by the employee, more than likely his office space is gone too as I am sure some whole offices will be closed down so less $$ are spent on rent and in buildings they own they may well sell. HP is a big company and even has its own airline (and building at the Mineta San Jose International Airport where it keeps its 12+ jets) so there are lots of places where cuts are being made.

lol, i don't think these 14,500 people are getting replaced by anyone - Indian or American.

richrich1 07-19-2005 08:21 AM

HP has ignored their indirect sales channel for far too long and now its showing what happens when you do that.....
