Work And Travel?

Has anyone tried doing this? Obviously if your job as a Webmaster and/or Pay Site Owner requires you to make phone calls and meet with people this doesn't apply to you. But those who work strictly from home and don't have to make phone calls I don't see why not.

Who's tried it and how did you do it? I'm talking some serious travel here too. Not some resort that has a internet connection ready for you in the hotel room...and you only stay for 4/5 nights. I'd be going for 2-3 months and staying in youth hostels. Last time I went backpacking was in Western Europe, this time I'd like to visit Australia. Other than internet cafes, what is there? Could be bring a wireless device with internet I suppose. But I'd probably have to buy internet connection over there.

I do it all the time. SERIOUS TRAVEL.... as in lost in the middle of Cambodia travel.

It depends on where you are going and what you will be doing but it's not to bad to plan it out so you stay connected.

Internet cafes are a must. Get a small lap top just for travel and plug in at the cafes to get some work done. I do that all the time.

Cambodia? Awesome! You sound like a hardcore traveler. I didn't even think of that. I forgot about the option of plugging in your own device at the internet cafes. You still have to pay per minute though right, just as you would one of the computers that the cafe owns?

Did you travel with a backpack? That's all I brought with me on my Western Europe solo trip in '99. I recently won a PSP from DollarMachine's contest and had thought about trying to get internet on it. But that would probably be a huge pain in the ass to use for that. I wonder how small a laptop is nowadays. I will have to look 'em up. Anything in particular you recommend?

I travel with 2 bags. Both carry on size for airplanes... one is for my clothes and the other is for my gear (cam & laptop bag). I NEVER check bags because I don't want to lose them. By now I have what I need down to a science and it all fits.

Yes, they still charge you for your time at the cafe but that's what you have to do.

You should also have a phone in the area you are in, outside of the USA gsm phones are everywhere so get chips for what ever area you go to. It's not the cheapest route but it keeps you connected. Get a tri-band unlocked phone to do this. Of course you can get a satellite phone but I hear those are expensive. Sprint and Vorizon have a new global phone but I'm not hearing good things about it.

You make a trip or two a forget shit but the more you do it the more down pat you get it. Of course there are times where you just can't be connected.
