I want to tour Alcatraz.
Google seems pretty useless on tour info. So....Have any of your been there and if so, which tour do you recommend?
I want to spend some time on the island....Not just on a boat there and back. |
Been there. Its creepy and chilling and not a recommended place to visit. You can feel the vibe of despair all over.

Been there, done that . . . would do it again. Go on the island, it is worth the time.
Don't wear heels, as I doubt they would be very comfortable. |

Perhaps I did not explain properly.....
I am looking for suggestions of which tours to take. I am definitely going. |

Go on the island. The last time I went there they did not have any options other than go on the island or not. If they have multiple choice options now, make sure you pick the one that includes being locked up in solitary. The couple minutes there is enough to know you would not want to do it for any long term stays, that is for sure. |
When I visited (5-6 years ago) there was only one if I remember correct. Very cool place though

I don't think you have a choice in the matter. These are the only guys that run tours http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com/
Aaron make sure you get tickets in advance. You can't just walk up there the day of or even the day before and try to get tickets. Especially in the summer. Also, once you get there you can go on the tour on your own pace so if you want to stay longer it's not an issue. |
I've taken visiting family there many times. I think they have a few different tours, like a midnight tour etc..But I'm not exactly sure.
We've always just done the standard tour. It's pretty cool. They give you headphones that explains everything and you just get to walk around on your own and take your time. It's not guided or timed or anything. You take a fairy boat across to the island and can stay as long as you want till the final boat comes back. It is kinda freaky like KRL says....but it was a maximum security prison after all. |

Thank you. That's exactly what I wanted to know. By checking Google you might think that there are many tour companies. One of them gave you only 20 minutes on the island. |
I highly recommend the audio tour of the cellblock. Very informative and very interesting too. I would recommend that you do that first. Also, be sure to listen to some of the speakers while you are there too. They usually have a couple of them every day. When we were there, we listened to a guy talk about the Birdman of Alcatraz for 45 minutes or so and it was really, really interesting!! We spent at least 5 hours on the island. After the audio tour, we spent lots of time just walking around the place...after seeing so many movies about Alcatraz, it was fun to just be there and soak it all in. Before you go, definitely watch Escape from Alcatraz again so it's all fresh in your mind :)
