"I have a lot of esteem for the British people and for Tony Blair," he said. "But I do not believe that the British social model is a model that we should copy or envy."

In his annual Bastille Day television interview he did concede that unemployment was lower in Britain than in France, where it is running at more than 10 per cent. But in public health and tackling poverty the French were "much better placed than the British", he said.

France put a higher percentage of its national wealth into education and scientific research than Britain, Mr Chirac added - "So I don't envy their model."

I mean you hear people bashing the States. You hear people bashing Canada. You hear people bashing China, and Russia. But it seems like everyone collectively hates the French, haha.

Im from England, so our natural enemy is the French, but I have to admit, France is a great country to visit or live in. I hate to admit it, but Chirac was right, the French have nothing to envy us for.

France need to give up their agricultural subsidies... It's only a small proportion of their economy but they're such a powerful lobby that have Chriac in their pocket. France would do much better if they stopped shooting themselves in the foot this way.

He's right about most of what he said, France does have a better social system than Britain, and obviously better food. All you people who rag on France without ever having been there make me laugh, it's like you're trying to look ignorant. Most "rich" Americans and Canadians, in other words people with a couple million dollars who think they're big shots, hate France because they could never afford to live there and have the same lifestyle, so they rag on the taxes and social benefits the lower classes get. It takes real money to live large on the French Riviera and the wannabe's hate that. France is far from perfect but they have it right in a lot of ways.

Can you back that up with some numbers? France is lagging behind according to the UN...

Rather than worrying about the British why don't they worry about the fact that something like 15% of "French People" *cough* are muslim, and that number is growing. If they don't get their priorities straight their culture is going to be wiped out in 50-100 years anyway. The idiots keep focusing on the Anglo-Saxon influences on their culture, but are too scared to say anything about the fucking one that is growing in power every year - Islam.

My step father is French; I've been to France more than I'd like to admit. I have lots of family there also. The house that my Aunt lives was occupied by a Nazi Colonel, and later by an American General. I've seen how my aunts, uncles, and cousins live in France. And none of them live as well as I do.

Some of the same people complaining about Chirac hiding behind patriotism because his approval ratings are so low are probably Bush supporters.

I don't think this is a good time for comments like that considering what had happened to London. No wonder most French people dislike their present leader.
