My fish commited suicide

I know it is sounds strange and unlikly, but my Betta fish that I bought for my son about a month ago jumped out of its small tank and we found it on the floor! No one told me that these fish jump! I did have a lid on the tank there was a space like 1/8th of and inch

I found this this morning online

Betta?s jump! Keep a lid, with holes for air, or keep the water level at least two inches below the top of the jar or tank.

So I was sitting with my friend last night in my livingroom having a few drinks and chatting away when I look over and ask her "do you see the fish in there?" that is when we both notice that the fish is not in its tank!

we found it on the floor next to the tv stand! OMG my son gets up this morning and looks up at me and says "where is my fish?" I am like it is gone somehow it jumped out of the tank and landed on the floor. we will get you a new one this weekend.

Damn! :Oh crap

It just couldn't take it anymore!

they are lung fish
they can breathe out of water, but they will eventually dry and die... oh well they're 3 dollars to replace get another one and pretend you never did... see his face when you say "no he was red yesterday today he's blue... magic son, magic"

DamageX 07-15-2005 07:31 AM

Most fish jump, actually. Some tend to do it more often, some almost never.

Platinum Red 07-15-2005 07:41 AM

I did not know that they jumped I thought I seen it jump before but i was not sure, so i closed the lid more just in case. i guess not closed enough

They all look the same. Get another, your child will never know. Easy with fish, not so easy with furry pets. I'm speaking from the POV of someone who's come home to a msytery pet in the past.

You are a smart motherfucker.

poor fish...

DivX 07-15-2005 08:13 AM

I found mine on the floor once. He jumped like 30 minutes earlier. I tough he was dead, picked him up to throw it away and the fucker started to move.

Anyway, he died because of an infection a week later :(

WiredGuy 07-15-2005 09:25 AM

The thought of seeing you drinking alcohol drove him to insanity. Always give your fish a shot. LOL

You'd jump out too if you were in one of those tiny glass bowls. That's cruel. How about I lock you in a 3x3 closet with a window and see how long it takes you to climb out?

put another tank next to it... out of one, into the other. :)

The same thing happened to my wife. She was cleaning the bowl for the beta and had the beta in a glass. Then she forgot about it while on the phone. about 2 hours later she remembered that she had started to clean out this fish bowl and took it back to the mantle only to see the fish had jumped out of the glass and off the mantle to the floor 5 feet below. The fish looked bad at the time (one eye bulging out and swimming only in circles becasue it couldn't see out of one eye.) But by morning he was fine. He didn't have a name at that time. But he became "lucky" after that night.

it's amazing that none of our dogs (5) got him on the floor.

Platinum Red 07-15-2005 11:45 AM

my dog was freaked out by it! would not go close to it even after it was dead

Never said you weren't. However, I wouldn't call anyone "motherfucker" unless they really did something bad to me, which I believe hasn't been the case here. Unless you'd care to elighten me what beef you have with me?

vivency-AdamQ 07-15-2005 11:48 AM

you have my condolences....RIP fishy

I couldn't help but laugh at the thread title about a fish committing suicide, but that is a sad story ...

Tell you son the fish was called to fishy heaven and a new fish at the pet store asked to come home and be his pet! that will make him feel better. (be sure to get a lid for this one tho. )

Holly Lez! 07-15-2005 12:50 PM

I've had red line snakeheads and arrowanna's jump out of tanks on me while I was out of the house

pythonx 07-15-2005 01:38 PM

Fish can remember for max. 2 seconds, so they don't care about the horrible things that happened in the past :thumbsup
This suicide is a mystery.

smitty2049 07-18-2005 05:51 AM

The disproved the fish memory thing on Myth Busters. It definately wasn't 2 seconds.
