Wear a grounding strap to avoid static electricity

sniperwolf 07-14-2005 06:51 PM

wow man... congrats on the new board!

No tips needed. Just make sure you make a note of the corner of the CPU with the missing pin, and line it up with the corresponding socket corner. A buddy of mine fucked up a $200 processor a while back forcing the thing into place.

The processor will simply drop into place if it's lined up correctly.

As spunky said...static is your enemy.

I have a dual core 3.0 pentium... was alot cheaper and seems much faster running multi-apps at the same time.

aflex 07-14-2005 07:14 PM

what kind of system have you built?

i have an AMD64 box with 4 Gigs of ram.. i didnt know before hand that Windows XP only handles 3GB and uses 1GB for PCI/AGP.. i feel cheated.. anyone know how to allocate the full 4gig to windows?

If you don't have a static strap just be sure to keep part of your body touching the metal case when ever you are working on it. This will ground your body to the PC. I work on machines all the time and have never had a anti static strap. Never had any issues from killing any parts either.

I'm the same way. I've been working on electronics so long that I'm used to keeping some part of my arm always touching the metal chassis, so I never use a ground strap, and have never zapped any parts. Also always work on a tile floor instead on carpet. And grounding straps or touching the chassis are USELESS unless the computer power cord is connected to an outlet for true ground (power OFF of course, DUH!). Another trick that helps is wipe your hands and tools down with one of those clothes dryer fabric softener sheets before you begin work, they're great for reducing static on you and the tools as well as removing static cling from your clothes! :thumbsup
