Serious question .... How do I format c: on a win2K machine ???
I have tried EVERYTHING to repair my MS Word application ... and nothing has worked .... so now as a last resort, I am trying to reformat my C drive .... and even that is turning out to be harder than expected ...
It tells me that it cannot format c because another process is accessing the volume ??? :( How does one go about reformatting the C drive on a Windows 2K machine ??? |
format c:
just kidding have you tried booting up with a win startup disk in the A:drive? dont think you can format a drive when you are running DOS on it also, i dont think that you can made a bootup disk in win2k, you might have to create one with win98 or Win ME. |
whoops
|
Goto run type in command then pop in a floppy disk and type copy autoexec.bat a:
reboot and that disk should start you at c:\ then just type format c: If not let me know I got another way for you to do |
boot from the w2k cd.
tell it to install (not repair) at some point you will get to a screen asking what partition you want to install on - at this point you can delete your current one and make a new partition - the install will format it for you or you could just tell it to install on the partition thats there and it will over write your current install hope this helps |
boot off a floppy, go into fdisk, remove the non-DOS partition, create a new DOS partition, exit fdisk, format c:
|
You might be able to boot from the CD as well.
If you reinstall windows, I think you still have to reinstall all your programs. might as well reformat. REMINDER Double check your backups. :) |

Ignore everything above the line. It does not make sense. format c: /s /v |
Or try this scanreg /restore
|
alright then pete .... riddle me this ....
every time I try to open word, it fucks off on me in 3 seconds flat ..(it just closes) I have uninstalled and re-installed it 3 times ... as well as reinstalled Windows .... and it is still doing the same thing ... My wife thinks that I did something to fuck it up ... and we have been fighting for 4 days over it, as she uses Word on a daily basis, and has not been able to .... |
Pete :
I have 3 different "format.com" files .... One in WINDOWS/COMMAND One in WINNT/ServivePackFiles/I386 One in WINNT/System32 ???????? |
Just boot with a bootable floppy containing format.exe (or whatever it is). Then run a:/format

Amp told you the right way to do this.
I think he might have left out... Use A win98 BOOT disk NOT a START UP disk. They are Diff. Forgot you should turn computer off after each step..Don't just reboot...turn it off.. |
I'd do a proper low-level format myself. :thumbsup
|
seriously now,as jimmyf said, follow AMPs steps
you have to erase the partition and to create a new one at the same size. Then you boot from the dos disk preferably ver 7.0+ and you format the disk or you can put the w2k disk and boot from there. It has a format option. If took backup dont be afraid to experiment ;) |

here's a step by step of what im talking about
if you boot using the cd you dont need the boot disks http://www.techadvice.com/win2000/i/...-win2k-pro.htm |
If you noodles made a drive image on CD after you install windows and stuff you could be back to a fresh install in 20 mins.
format c: /q is much more fun |
Remove old hd, add new hd and boot off the windows cd and install from there.

Do not forget to reboot your computer BEFORE formatting c after the fdisk. If you are using NTFS and do not do this... It likes to forget that you did an fdisk at all. |
-=HUNGRYMAN=- if you haven't reinstalled yet, I have a few ideas on fixing your word. I added you on ICQ.

Not all of us get all our software from Gnutella :Oh crap OK .... with that out of the way ... nothing that anybody suggested seemed to be working ... I tried with an old win98 starup disk ... I even made a new one with my win98 machine ... still nothing ... I stuck a Win95 boot disk that I had kicking around in the machine, and VOILA !! :thumbsup I guess I'll be holding on to that badboy a while longer :D Thanks for all of you who tried to help ... I really appreciate it. |
ok here you go...... again
1) make a startup disk / rebootable floopy. 2) reboot 3) press down delete and get into the systems setting. 4) delete partion (it will delete everthing) 5) Reboot with the startup disk in palace. 6) recreate HDD partian if you want. 7) c:\ format c. :thumbsup Regards, BookMarc |

I have installed windows only ... and my C drive it at 1.36 GB already ... last time I checked ... CDs were only good for 700MB ?? |
-=HUNGRYMAN=- am sure amp can tell you how to make a boot disk if not you can hit me up on ICQ and I'll tell you...
A boot disk has 1 or 2 things a start up disk does not have and is Diff. When you make one I'd make 2,3 or more of them and boot with each one make sure they work... Hell I must have atleast 10 of the dam thing's or more. |
Anybody ???:Oh crap

If am not mistaken you said you found a boot disk. And I assumed you didn't know how to make one. So when you need some help am sure you'll get with the program. :thumbsup |
Ever thought of doing a regedit on MS Word.
Just delete everything pointing to word in the reg Or you can just buy a new Hard Drive........Why format ? |
