How many children go missing a day in the U.S.?

I read on stats.org that last year 1.5 MILLION Children went missing in the U.S. That's a staggering 4110 PER DAY! Isn't it amazing that only a handful of them make the news.

I just thought I'd share this because I found it extraordinary! 4110 A DAY go missing!!! WTF!?!?! :disgust

Only the blonde, blue-eyed college girls are "news worthy".

I would have had no idea that that many went missing, hell i wouldn't even thought 4k+ a year.

Or if there are no other big stories going on at that time. They highlight some missing cases in order to boost ratings. Sad but true.

.. and because of this there have been numerous program like the project safekids and amber alert program to help lessen the stats... and companies selling child safety id kits to help parents locate their missing kids..

Ace-wtf 07-12-2005 09:15 AM

so it's not worth a news topic? :(

I was reading this tech article a while back about these little gps chips that can be enbedding in a childs skin so if they are ever taken they can be tracked down.

Would you go that far to protect your child? Is that overkill? Im thinking if it saves 1 child it is worth producing! I guess I would

All I know is that it is a big amount.

i think alot of those "missing" are either runaways, or kidnapped by their own parent (custody battle between divorced parents), or they are found within a day or two.

missing, to me, means they are gone, with a stranger, for more than 2 days, no sign of them. probably only about 10% of those 4,000 a day are real cases.

You got it. The majority of "missing" are usually runaways and like you said are usually found right away.

I wouldn't say it's 4k a day, but I would guess somewhere between 50-100 maybe by national averages. By Fox News, 1 blonde haired, blue eyed girl every few months.

I agree 100% (and it even indicated that on the stat.org site) but even at 10%, 400 kids a day is just insane!

Sad that we only hear about the middle to upper class children. We never hear about the others :( The "others" are statistics, the chosen few special ones are prime time news ratings.

Too bad they can't send f-16 fighters to search for every one of them.
