Israel Asks for $2.2B in Aid for Pullout

WASHINGTON -- Israeli officials called at the White House Monday in a bid for $2.2 billion in U.S. aid to help fund the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and part of the West Bank and security measures linked to the pullback.

Separately, an Israeli delegation resumed talks at the Pentagon on U.S. efforts to restrict Israeli weapons deals with China and other nations.

Israel is due to relinquish Gaza and remove all Jewish residents and Israeli troops later this summer. Four Israeli settlements on the West Bank also are to be abandoned.

It is a move that has the support of the Bush administration along with an expectation that if it proceeds smoothly, Israel would be encouraged to give up more West Bank land to the Palestinians for a state of their own.

"We'll certainly be interested in hearing what the Israeli government has to say," Tom Casey, a State Department spokesman, said.

Asked if Israel would be given the $2.2 billion, on top of about $2.3 billion in annual U.S. military and economic assistance, Casey said, "there has been no request made, and I certainly cannot respond to anything we haven't heard yet."

Israel's delegation was headed by Yossi Bachar, director general of the finance ministry. National Security Council and State Department officials participated in the meeting.

Earlier, in Jerusalem, Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres said Israel was requesting $2.2 billion and that some of the money would be used to remove settlers and their possessions.

Last month, Israeli and U.S. delegations met for two days at the Pentagon without concluding an agreement to govern Israeli weapons deals.

The talks focused, in part, on Israel's planned sale to China of spare parts for Harpy armed drone aircraft.

The Bush administration objects on grounds it would upgrade China's anti-radar aircraft.

The Israeli Interlligence pays back ten times more value in the end. The US knows that :2 cents:

IT WAS UNITED STATES THAT FORCES THE PULLOUT PLAN ON ISRAEL. So what do you expect?
In my opinion they should pay for the WHOLE plan and not just give some aid.

as long as we're going to give the palestinians 2.2b in 'aid for move in' then I'd say it's a fair request

So the US gives Isreal 2.3 bil a year, so they can buy an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction.

And they are requested to bribe Isreal with 2.2 bil to do the right thing, and work for peace.

And they invade Iraq to steal their oil, and make Haliburton shareholders rich.

Makes sense to me!

At least they are trying to do something about the situation there.

Whatever. Everybody knows that everyone is spying on everyone. That's just the way the world works. But in the end of the day, it is the Mossad that gives the most valuable intel.

they are by far one of the most connected/human-networked intel agencies

I think they may have created the concept of 'force multipliers' through the use of a large civilian network, in which sometimes the participants have no idea that they are contributing to the Mossad agency bank of information

Well I wouldn't expect it to make sense to you. Since Israel is withdrawing over land it now has control with its military, and it has to put in new security measures then why shouldn't the world help. It's not like the palestinians can pay for things to get done for themselves. This has to be done so why should Israel be on the hook for them??????

Yeah. It's true. I am not sure what you are looking for on this? Some kinda drum roll. Yeah, they sank one of our ships, which was all hush hushed by the government.

Much the same way a lot of the shit was in the 10 day war. If you are going to cite facts, site more than one lopsided one chief. Not sure what you were looking to accomplish on the Liberty sinking, but there have been plenty more cases to cite as well, so I suppose you need to change your handle to 'library', and go visit one.

It's a bit more than that. You have people giving up property in these areas, and moving back to the actual area they SHOULD be in. So it's not just gas for their tanks and food for troops to move back. It's property etc.

I'm still against it however. You moved into that area, and you knew the risks. While Isreal apparently planned on giving back some of the '67 gains, I guess if that was always the game plan, I never would have allows Jews in the area to set up those, 'settlements'.

Just me. I would not have inflamed a situation for some terrritoy I was planning to abadon in the long run.

I agree, they are doing this all for peace since the UN/World has pressured Israel to do so. Israel is sacrificing its land and has to pay for the process, why shouldn't it be compensated, this is what the world wants.
