Stealing blogs via RSS

if your blogs have RSS feeds ...

Found a site where they pilfered 700+ blogs from the RSS feeds on one of my sites. They plopped them all into a "forum" word for word for word.

Did have a link back to the main site, but sheeeeesh man
and no they never asked if they could......
let them find their own bloggers....

I disabled RSS feed creation

It's a .to domain so trackin anyone down is lotsa fun LOL

thought I'd share the experience

Guess I haven't been keeping up too tight with RSS feeds, but I thought they were meant for short descriptions describing an article - like a way to disseminate headlines that link to the source of the headline.

Were your RSS feeds complete articles / blog postings, and if so, is that standard now - to have an xml file full of complete story?

xlogger 07-11-2005 12:25 PM

Can i see this domain please?

cambaby 07-11-2005 12:27 PM

I post my full RSS feed complete with referal link love. Think about it RSS takes less bandwidth and you still get your money making products out in the wild.

sucks that their stealing your written content word for word but it's just bringing you more traffic and giving your blog exposure not really hurting you unless they were stealing your text and changing all the links and then posting them on their blog

Except this is more of a "real" blog site not a tgp kinda blog site

So when they steal they steal content and other peoples words, not affiliate links. And yes, they do have a link back, but the way it was done is still bogus....

it would be like crawling through "blogger" and making another site with all the blogs snatched from there via any RSS found ....

I have a bunch of "community" type blogging sites in work, all custom made and this one was the first of the bunch.....

This is what they did......

This is my ORIGINAL blog site project .......

RSS wasn't intended to be used this way... arghhhh

Why the fuck RSS was ON if you dont want ppl to republish the snippet text in it?

Thats the goal of RSS/XML feed.

Dont cry if you find your text on yahoo/msn/moreover or on a RSS directory in a few weeks, they index all RSS feed they can find.

RSS is an INVITE for PPL to republish the shit you set in it.

*Hint : Dont put ALL your content in the RSS , so ppl will visit you to get the whole text.

Yea, that's what I was asking in my first post:

For "real" blog sites dont put the full text do what the above poster suggested. Dont blame RSS, lol thats like blaming hotlinkers without knowing how to use HTACCESS.

Lester 07-11-2005 12:48 PM

Yeah, but my point is that they took all the feeds and didn''t just make a rolling headline link back etc.

They made 700+ forum entries just to fill up their message board.

Some folks here on GFY have feed software on their pages and sites that does RSS the way it's supposed to be used, not this way.....

:1orglaugh Adapt and do something different. If you don't want them to use your feed in whatever way they choose add a TOS and blacklist them from your site so they can't grab the feed (as easily). They link back to you, they use your content, thats pretty much exactly what RSS is supposed to do.

good to know. thats for the tip

He use what you provide in the RSS, publish it and link back to you , thats how RSS/XML work.

The problem is on your side , just cut the text to 200 chars, problem solved.

RSS/XML links are NOT to tell ppl, hey im a great leet webmaster i have RSS on my site , there is some basic use for them.

is the way to use RSS feed info
just a headline or two or four and link back
updated when a new blog was posted with new headlines etc
NOT an entire site archived from day one and posted as if it was all part of theblogsump....

That was my point not the logic behind RSS or how I have it set up.

He couldn't have posted your entire article if your RSS wasn't set up like that. RSS is an open invite to republish your work, don't cry about it when someone does. The example you gave is ONE use of RSS, not the end all.

If you're using full posts instead of summaries in your RSS feed it's your own fault anyway. By doing that you distract the readers from actually visiting your site and looking / clicking on ads.
