How do you build up credit ?

I know one way is to buy credit cards and use em - pay back ext ext. But i cannot get a credit card because they say i need a 'real job'. They dont care how much $ i got in the bank.

I dont like to owe people stuff, thats why i always use debit cards.

These people will give you a credit card, they specialize in post-bankruptcy/distressed credit cases. It will likely have a $500 limit, make sure you max it and pay it off every month. It will also have some sort of fee to get it, in the $100 range, which is the price you have to pay for the situation you're in. No bitching. :)

Another way to improve your credit is to make absolutely sure you have no outstanding collections on any of the three major credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union). Get a copy of your credit report, preferably from the three agencies directly, and check it for unpaid debts/collections. You'd be surprised at how things find their way on there...

You should be able to cash secure a credit card. It might take 150% of the card limit, but you should be able to do it. Do that then charge up and pay it off each month, on time.

If you buy something like a computer or TV or something, see if the store or company offers a payment plan and if so, try to get approved for it and use that, even if you have the money upright.

Pay your taxes would be the first thing to do to get a real job ... I never had any problems getting a CC...

HA, these suggestions are funny.
First you can get a credit card but you should try to get a limit of 1k at least. A 500 limit card won't help your credit score much if at all.
Second you can always lease a car or some other larger toy.
Also try buying a house, that'd help you a bit.

If you have money in the bank or even a savings account with regular deposits, your bank should be more than happy to give you a credit card. When I was a student, my bank gave me a student Visa with a $1000 limit. Over the years my limit has been raised a couple times, but it really doesn't matter to me too much because I typically use my corporate card instead of personal.

Credit system is still not ussual here in Czech.
I can recognize the very first steps in GE money bank (its US bank I think) but anyway the very most of people here has just debit cards.

It will help immensely. My cousin had a business-related BK in 2000, and even a $250 card helped raise his post-BK credit scores by nearly 50 points in just 12 months. It has nothing to do with the amount of credit available.

Ignore The Heron, re-read my post, WarChild's post, and Code_Havoc's post. All are dead nuts accurate.

If you have a stable well funded bank account for 2+ years it shouldn't be a problem to get a credit card from that bank.

If you have a business, pay taxes and are able to show a proof of income you can also get one anywhere else.

I got my first credit card when I was 18 (Mastercard) and asked my bank for it. Always had a well funded bank account due to previous business activities, they said no problem, you'll get a Mastercard with a 10.000$ limit within 30 days.

Mastercard seems to be the house card of most banks here and associated with no proof of income procedures if the bank thinks you should be able to get one.
