These days, you have to care about you.

AmigoPorn 07-10-2005 10:45 AM

In my country live most of my loved ones. So if I say me, I would feel selfish.

Don't you think it depends on the situation?

yup. I know this is GFY punkworld, but that's a stupidly simplistic question and you know it.

It's a question that makes a lot more sense than "Write a 10000 word essay on the relationship between yourself and the country you live in, and how much and in which ways you value both", at least for a message board.

Not really. I think it is entirely possible to generally place more value on one or the other. Ofcourse there can always be exceptions, but this is just a simple poll made for entertainment rather than for a detailed scientific study.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 07-10-2005 11:04 AM

So putting my country first or myself first is a matter of patriotism these days?

That surprises you?

patriotism

Of course and I have put my life on the line many times...and 99% of all of those that have ever taken the oath for military service have proven that they are willing to die for their country.

beta-tester 07-10-2005 01:04 PM

Interesting question....I'd say I like more myself, than country....

Corleone 07-10-2005 01:20 PM

10000% me, my family, my friends... and then after my car, ipod, shoes comes the country :D

CDSmith 07-10-2005 01:26 PM

If it comes down to a situation where my country needs guys in their 40's like me to defend it, the situation must be pretty bad. In that sense, if you're not willing to put your life on the line to defend your country and your country gets taken over and you get enslaved, all because you are too busy trying to preserve your own skin.... then you ain't worth spit.

In some scenarios, if you lose your country you lose your way of life. If your family, friends and way of life aren't worth dying for I feel sorry for you.

Sly 07-10-2005 01:34 PM

Interesting question.

Typically I care about myself first. After school I was big into government, thought I could change the world, etc. Now I really don't care. My dad told me a long time ago that most people just want to live their life with no interruptions, the daily grind of life, that makes them happy. I've come to the realization that is fairly true. For the most part, I really only care about myself and those around me.

However, I don't expect my country or any country for that matter to consider me anything more than a number. In the grand scheme of things, you and I are both individual numbers that really don't matter. Fifty years after I die nobody will care, hell, fifteen years after nobody will care. With that said, I expect my country to make decisions based on its best interest and longevity instead of an individuals best interest, such as my own. Does that make sense?

Would I fight and die for my country? If it was necessary and I was able to, then yes I would. I am just a number needed to prolong the life of others.

Violetta 07-10-2005 02:12 PM

I come first!

Garou 07-10-2005 03:15 PM

country of course

sperbonzo 07-10-2005 04:44 PM

Country for me. That's why I served.

Unfortunately, I think that I'm in the minority these days

Varius 07-10-2005 04:52 PM

Me.

When I lived in Canada, I didn't even consider it a country. Atleast the part I was in (Quebec).

Canada has no culture that is uniquely it's own (beer and hockey maybe?). To me, that's what makes a country. They still have the queen on their money, don't have their "own" language (Eh?), and their population is mostly comprised of people from every other nation on earth.

That's not a country to me.

Here in Costa Rica, I feel for the people here it IS a country atleast, just not MY country (as I don't like certain aspects that makes them their culture: futbol, religion, types of food, types of music, etc...).

So that makes my answer easy. To choose me or my country: ME.

nico-t 07-10-2005 05:00 PM

survival is in our nature, its any living creatures nature, patriotism is something people learn from propaganda. So me, naturally.
