WTF!? Is this an eBay scam or something?

I put a laptop up for sale a couple days ago and I keep getting emails like this:

Quote:

Hello seller, Am a British Army Officer, i will like to buy your laptop as a gift for my grandson, whose birthday is coming up,his on training to the American Embassy in Nigeria, since i need this for his birthday that makes it urgency needed, since his so crazy about this particular laptop, when i forwarded the page to him,I will like to know what you are asking for this laptop,i will be paying through bidpay money order, since it is faster and get's approved in a maximum period of hours.so i will want you to advise the name and physical address where the payment should be sent to and a valid email address for confirmation transfer from bidpay. But before then,I'll like to know how soon can it be ready for shipment. Can i offer you $950 for this laptop???????? pls can you personally handle this for me??? reply expected.

I have gotten ones from Russia, Nigeria, and South Africa. What is the deal with these contacts? One guy from Nigeria said that he was a college professor and offered me $3000 for it. It's an older laptop and worth a max of $800.

Is this a scam or something?

Hey just tell them since their request is so unusual that you'll gladly send it after their money is cleared by your bank.

The excessive use of question marks and "pls" clearly show he is some scamming kid or just plain retarded.

for him to have a grandson in the army he would have had a kid at 16 and his kid have a kid at 16 that would make him 48 any older and he would be in his 60's kind of old to be in the army dont ya think

That's a Nigerian 419 scam.
What they will do is send you a fake check with a couple thousand dollars more than you asked for, then ask you to cash it and wire them the remaining funds.
Then when the check does not clear, you are pretty much fucked.

Here's a funny site:

yep, they tried to get a friend on mine that was selling a pick-up, with a cashier's check this way.

oh I might add...

you put the cashier's check in the bank, send the product 3 to 5 days later the bank tells you the check is no good.
