abyss_al 07-09-2005 04:04 PM

maybe some sort of big trivia where it involves thinking... and maybe teaming up with someone/group.. a team effort type thing

tranza 07-09-2005 04:11 PM

Trivia is cool.

I like that. Group trivia. Should the questions be industry related or general trivia?

something big... where it involves people to creat teams with peeps knowledgeable of different things... setup a signup section where everyone signs up, and submits their specialty, then you group them as teams, and send out emaails of the daily trivia or something... this would be really cool :pimp

pxxx 07-09-2005 04:14 PM

I would like one that has a car as a prize.

WiredGuy 07-09-2005 04:16 PM

I'd like a PSP or GPS-guided map system for my car.

I feel saddened that the last "GFY contest" was a scam in disguise and I'm disappointed I didn't get to be a judge! So, whatever contest it is... please fulfill my dreams of being a judge! :)

Sincerely,
Furious_Female

PS. hehe :)!

What would be a good CONSOLATION prize (cash amount) and what would be a decent GRAND PRIZE?

pornguy 07-09-2005 04:48 PM

I think good quality traffic would pay off nicely. But Ha! Good luck on that!

How about clicked traffic as a prize?

abyss_al 07-09-2005 04:55 PM

prize really depends on size of contest and complexity

After Shock Media 07-09-2005 04:56 PM

How about some form of contest that has something to do with being a damn webmaster, something that uses thought, skill, and creative thought.
Enough of the for idiots & surfer contests.

Hmmmmm please elaborate.

DWB 07-09-2005 05:03 PM

I think a contest would be cool for a free month worker at an outsourcing company.

Others...

Free software (quality)
Free camera
Free week (or month) in a top posters sig spot
Free site re-design (pay or free site)
Free content

DWB 07-09-2005 05:04 PM

Oh yea... I hate the contests where you have to be post #10000 or what ever. Those suck.

$5 submissions 07-09-2005 05:08 PM

Aftershock, please elaborate on the more quality INTENSIVE contest format you suggested. The first thing that came to mind was a banner contest (based on your suggestion above) but that's a bit limited since not all webmasters here can do graphics. Others focus on traffic and others focus on other things. What would be a good design format that appeals to most webmasters' lowest common denominator? (and no... no drama thread contests please LOL)

Everything I can think of would be a logitsical nightmare to pull off.
Something that would go to the lowest common denominator would prolly have to be something along the lines of a free site competition. Where it could be graphical or text. Who ever judges though should have full access to server stats so one shared server for the contestants would be good, also that way if the server goes down everyone is equally effected. Then maybe have it so they need to send sales to a few pre selected sponsors. Again judge would need stat access to the accounts.
Place everyone on equal footing for the most part. Then maybe set a 100.00 spending limit or something to be used on anything they want from a given list of items for sale. I say a given list so each person has same access to same resources and no special deals are cut. It even could use virtual fake money as the spending money. Again to level the playing field and make it equal.

I agree that it would be a logistically tricky proposition. However, what Im stuck on is that there's a diverse mix of people on GFY and building sites may not be their shared lowest common denominator. On GFY there are

Site owners
Affiliates that build sites for traffic
designers
Affiliates that don't use sites for traffic--use landing pages or really crude (but effective) messages
Mailers
Content producers
Content distributors
Site reps -- level 1 (ie., actually able to answer questions re the program and hook people up with special deals)
Site reps -- level 2 and 3 (board personalities who can help with program info/arrangements to a degree)
Sig reps (whore is such a harsh word)
Purely Board personalities
Outsourcing firm reps
Programmers--application levels
Purely traffic generators
Toolbar / special app traffic generators
community board operators/mods (surfer boards that allow adult content)

And many others

So, what would be an contest that COVERS as much of the demographic above and be MEANINGFUL enough (both for participants and the sponsor)?

Trivia is good because all of the above can participate. Task-specific contests as you suggested, I am excited about, but the task has to be broadened enough to cover the people above's range of skills.

bump for more info. Depending on the answers, contest coming soon :)

After Shock Media 07-09-2005 06:12 PM

Industry trivia ussually means who ya know, how long ya been in biz, or if your a social person. Other trivia just means how well you know to query google.

Good points. Is there a middle path between overtly specific trivia and general trivia? Or perhaps between trivia and your suggestion (which I like a lot but needs to be configured to hit a more general skills demographic)?

$5 submissions 07-09-2005 08:19 PM

Bumping for more info

Spunky 07-09-2005 08:21 PM

Trivia..not those post the most bullshit ones

$5 submissions 07-09-2005 09:43 PM

The question is what type of trivia... general knowledge? Or trivia that only the demographic listed above will appreciate?

bjjb 07-09-2005 10:06 PM

I liked the one Silvercash did a few months back. All trivia - daily question, about Silvercash programs and sites. Prixes were computers, tvs , gaming consoles etc. Kept everyone honest cause ya actually had to have a little knowledge of SC and had to search for the answers. Being a post whore from way back it hurts saying this, but those contests are getting old lmao

So this type of contest would be okay with you? ie., Trivia contest re info re the sponsor?

How about a game of chance that can be EASILY VERIFIABLE? Of course, participants have to do something webmaster-related to make their entries.

DarkJedi 07-10-2005 12:43 AM

Trivia sounds good.
And i still don't have a PSP.

IceMaster 07-10-2005 04:12 AM

Yes , i agree trivia would be good.

Manowar 07-10-2005 04:14 AM

Free traffic or cool gadgets like PSPs

ssp 07-10-2005 04:32 AM

How about:

Runner-up: A shitload of traffic from a broker
Grand prize: A brand new pimping server

Make the prizes webmaster related, keep the surfers away.

How big should the flat screen be? Also, $1K for ALL runnersup? Shouldn't there be a decreasing breakdown?

Yeah if its all about branding, why not make it all about the brand.

A contest that gives away a lot of money.
