Why are so many of you afraid to...

put where you're from in the location field?

Surely it wouldn't kill you to at least put what country you're from...

would it?

Why the secrecy?

It's just kind of weird when someone posts something like "It's raining out now, the weather here SUCKS" but they don't say where "here" is.

Nevermind trying to 'splain why people don't do it, I'm not interested in excuses. I just want to know why you're not proud enough of your country of origin to put in in your profile, or how it could possibly hurt you to do so.

You have to be proud of where you are from to post it.

I live in multiple countries, I travel frequently, and I don't see much benefit to sharing that kind of personal information anyway. I'm plenty proud of my country of origin, but I don't feel I need to thrust that pride in other's faces. IMO, it's also somewhat presumptuous and arrogant to assume that random strangers would give a shit about where I'm from.

With that said, I try to avoid making vague posts such as "It's raining here" without qualifying where "here" is.

DWB 07-09-2005 02:11 PM

All you need to know is that if I post where I'm at, INTERPOL will get that much closer to closing another case.

Saying what country you're from hardly qualifies as "that kind of personal information" :1orglaugh

And when someone cocks off about another person's country, for example, they should at least have the onions to put where they're from in their profile. Hardly arrogant or presumptuous, it's common courtesty. :winkwink:

I think it does qualify as "that kind of personal information"

By the way, it's a "Location" field, not a "Country of origin" field. I'm not even in my country of origin right now anyway.

Also, it's been incredibly interesting seeing other's reactions to my posts when they don't know what country I'm from. It's always a good laugh when people make incorrect assumptions. If I put my location in my profile, I'd be limiting my fun for the benefit of others, and I consider GFY a form of entertainment. Besides, this is GoFuckYourself.com not HugsAndKisses.com, I'm not overly concerned with common courtesy here. Now please excuse me, I must go repent my sins to Jebus.

This just says "I love to fuck with people and run down their city/state/country but am too chickenshit to tell anyone what great wonderful banana republic I'm from"

Am I wrong? :winkwink:

1. I don't take pleasure in running down people's city/state/country. I'm not the type of person who repeatedly starts threads for the purpose of bashing another country.

2. It's a location field, not a "Where I'm from" field.

3. I like to consider myself more of a 'citizen of the world' than any specific nationality. I've learned and appreciated so much from the various countries I've lived in or visited that I don't care to define myself by one specific nationality. I'm somewhat of an internationalist, so branding myself with a single nationality wouldn't be consistent with my personal ideology.

I'm not sure why people dwell on nationality so much anyways, I think people's ideologies are much more interesting than their nationality.

CDSmith 07-09-2005 03:46 PM

People with no location or the name of the country they're in indicated shouldn't run other people's country down. Of course they're going to do it, but others (like me) certainly have the right to call them on their cowardess.

And it is cowardly.

And Brisk, I didn't have you specifically in mind when I posted this, I had everyone who does it in mind.

Maybe you should put "Earth" in yours then. :D

Considering the extent of some of the country bashing here on GFY, sometimes I think it's a good thing the people involved don't put their nationality in their profile, the discussion would likely descend into even more useless mud slinging than it already does.

Also, perhaps not revealing your location isn't always cowardess, but maybe it's like a Sun Tzu 'Art of War' kinda thing, a strategic move that allows someone to attack their enemy while not revealing their own position? If the British SAS or American Delta Force don't reveal their position before attacking, does this make them cowards?

Whatever the reason, I think there should be less nationality bashing on GFY and more ideology bashing. :thumbsup

CDSmith 07-09-2005 04:25 PM

To compare apples to lug nuts doesn't make one's argument stronger. :D

Agreed on the less nationality bashing :thumbsup
