Top-spammer Christopher Smith picked up by the Police

Ownd - http://www.silicon.com/research/spec...9150092,00.htm
One of the world's most prolific spammers has been arrested in the US as he stepped off a plane from the Dominican Republic, where he had been holed up running his illegal operation.

Christopher Smith, originally from Minnesota, has moved his operation around the world to locations such as China and Malaysia, according to Spamhaus. Earlier this year US authorities seized assets from Smith and shut down one of his businesses which was illegally selling pharmaceuticals online.

According to Steve Linford from Spamhaus, who traces the movements of the world's worst spammers, Smith then went on the run with a fake passport.

During this time Spamhaus was in contact with the FBI, sharing information on Smith's movements and activities. Spamhaus was notified by the FBI about Smith's plans to return to the US and Smith was arrested late last week as he stepped off the plane in Minneapolis.

Since they've passed laws against spam, my total daily spam load has increased.

BlackCrayon 07-06-2005 01:21 PM

i wonder how much time is diverted away from real crimes that endanger society to do this.

The loss of billions of dollars in productivity and $$ invested in fighting it is a huge deal Kimmy.

White collar crime is very serious and does deserve jail.

As they start picking off the larger ones they are going to come after the smaller ones.

Get used to it.

The world hates SPAM and it isn't going to get any easier.

cherrylula 07-06-2005 01:37 PM

good riddance.

jayeff 07-06-2005 01:39 PM

Excellent news. Unfortunately our justice system doesn't include any very long, slow and excrutiatingly painful punishments.

The time spent crying over it as opposed to hitting the delete button is a much bigger waste of time and productivity.

Incorrect.

It should result in a fine, but that's it.

Jail time for sending emails is ridiculous. What next - jail time for cloaking websites and redirecting to porn?

jjjay 07-06-2005 02:15 PM

I don't like spam, but spamhaus really are a bunch of crybabies.

Why isn't real junk mail (credit card offers, new papers, ads, ect...) that come in your mail box and fill it up to the max considered SPAM also? I didn't ask for it yet everyday I check my mail box it's full of shit I don't even want or even asked for.

vvq 07-06-2005 02:34 PM

you think servers and bandwith are cheap? spammers pay just like anyone else. they're not hurting anyone, or anything. most do offer opt out links. they don't want to waste time and resouces mailing to people that will never make a purchase. kids don't have credit cards either, why would spammers target them? they don't. spamming hurts no one. all these stupid laws just send the business overseas.

Wow.

I'm amazed by your lack of intelligence.

Really. I thought you were smarter than that.

Who Knew?!

Yeah Kimmy, let the entire world SPAM every single email address.

Do the math Kimmy.

If someone spends 15 min a day going through SPAM at work, what is the cost to US corporations in a years time? What about storage, bandwidth, server maintenance Kimmy?

How much time would it take if SPAM was 'OK'?

Do the math Kimmy. Your "Delete It" theory does not hold much water.

geez hellooooooo

V_RocKs 07-06-2005 02:40 PM

Corporations that cannot afford to house spam should just stop doing email all together.

240 avg. work days per year
x 15 min.
= 60 hours per year (1-1/2 week wasted deleting e-mail)

If one of the mainstream articles I read can be believed it generates far more revenue than it costs - I think it said it cost US businesses something like $11 billion per year but generated $36 billion.

But since it's illegal in the US now spammers just go overseas where the profits go as well, so while it continues to cost just as much the taxable income ends up getting siphoned away from the US economy.

The law does however fulfill its basic function of creating the illusion that legislators are doing something usefull and helpful to the common voter.

Glad you responded to the idiot with some sense.

jayeff 07-06-2005 03:12 PM

Either there are people who will post anything to get their sigs viewed, or some people here are being deliberately obtuse.

I don't get x-rated - and worse - material in my regular mailbox and much as I might like to see junk mail stopped too, it takes no time at all to flip through my mail and drop the junk in a bin. By comparison, so much of my email is spam that attempting to block it inevitably means legitimate email sometimes getting trashed too. Checking the emails which aren't highlighted and quickly scanning those that are to check that no emails I want are among them, takes longer - every time I collect my email - than checking my regular mail once a day.

No-one can send me spyware or adware via regular mail. I don't get junk mail with links claiming to let me unsubscribe but which in fact confirm my address is live, so that I get more spam. I don't get phishing attempts and viruses in my regular mail, which are made harder to spot because of all the spam they arrive with.

And at least regular mailers show some intelligence. Even if I forget to opt out, I only get mails from companies I have bought from and from people selling similar merchandise. I do not get barraged with 100's of invitations to join porn sites every day because some sponsor program sold their affiliate list and the buyers are too stupid to figure out that webmasters don't need to pay for porn.

Downtime 07-06-2005 03:14 PM

great news but spam will never stop

jayeff 07-06-2005 03:22 PM

Oh and one other thing... junk mail outfits don't use my address to disguise the sender, so there's no chance I'm going to have to waste hours explaining to ISP's, hosts and Uncle Tom Cobbley, that no, it wasn't me who sent out the spam that got them buried in complaints.
