Depends largely on what they're into. Personally I love the museums. The monuments, of course are a big draw. There are numerous civil war battle fields within a couple of hours drive. Mount Vernon is about 30 minutes from downtown. The gardens of the National Cathedral are a nice place to sit and contemplate life. If I recall correctly its only about hour and a half drive to Anapolis and the Chesepeake bay.

I haven't been too impressed by the restaurants in DC. That might just be because when I lived there on a student budge I didn't eat out and when I've gone back on vacations I've tended to eat at the places I wanted to eat at as a student.

I know that they intend to do the Smithsonian...and from what I understand that will actually take several days...and I will pass on your other suggestions. Thanks.
