Is it legit to optimize

...different index pages for submission to different search engines...ie...one for google...one for altavista etc? Or will this somehow get one's site banned?

So out of the multiple search engines you have to select only one that you can optimize your site for. Kind of sucks doesn't it? At one time one could optimize for multiple SE's...without penalty.

You could make different doorways for each SE and prevent other SE`s from picking them by .htaccess
