WHat is the main difference between mpeg1,mpeg2 and wmv

I know that of MPEG1, the quality is worse. But are there still ppl(members) who can't play mpeg2?

As far as wmv or mpeg2. What is the maindifference between them? Since I can have them both in 1500kbits and a big size...

Main differences...
Compression
Quality
and a DOJ antitrust lawsuit waiting to be filed...

MPEG1 is the standard MPEGs you see videos using.

MPEG2 is what they use for Digital Television, DVDs, and satellite broadcasting.

WMV is what Microsoft is best known for doing, taking someone else's idea and making it their own. WMV is based off of MPEG1. Same with RealMedia and Quicktime.

MPEG4 is like MPEG1 but is made to encompass all types of media, like text, animation, interactive buttons, etc.

There's also MPEG7 and MPEG21...

You shouldn't be using MPEG2 for your website.

Thanks all. As far as MPEG1. In studio I can't increase the size of the vid(while it's coming from dv) IS there a max size for mpeg1?

Also, when the DV is pal, can I still choose WMV 1500 NTSC 720*576 without problems?(I can't choose PAL, therefor I ask)

Compression
Quality
File Size

MP2 as someone else said is DVD quality (as well as other apps). MP1 is standard, and WMV is a different compression that will generally help in file size.

A lot of how you encode depends on your preference, and how you want to deliver it. One websites I prefer encoding in dvix for decent quality, and smaller file sizes. I used to encode in xvid, but after new computer, there was a problem with my XL Cleaner and couldn't do it anymore.

Any choice really depends on what you are looking to do ultimately.

lately I prefer wmv over mpeg.
When I put a raw avi through cleaner I normally do MPG1, MPG2 (for future DVD project) and wmv, and I think the wmv's rock! :)
We'll probably only offer wmv's on our sites in the future :)

Thanks all. Just curious, in Studio I can't select WMV 1500 640-480, only 720*576 ANy idea why this is?

Thanks Pipe. MPG2 is what ************* uses for DVD production. They have a 600 gig FTP server with over 400 shoots on it in MPG2 format. The files are huge and take a while to download but webmasters that are pretty savvy use them in a variety of ways.

If you don't want to compress files on your own then SoBeGirl also has the 400 shoots in wmv files in 4 different speeds. Most webmasters go for the files in wmv format.

I love MPG 2 files. I Have the codecs to read them on all my machines.

I don't like the fact ppl needs codecs for it. Better answer my PAL/NTSC question:) Is it possible to have a WMV NTSC in 640*480 size? Stuido only shows a strange size for NTSC

I use mpg1 and wmv :2 cents:
