Why Dont Schools Teach Kids To Be 'Internet Savvy'?
You'd think with all the new fangled technological advances over the past few decades the education system would have adopted to these changes.
Instead of useless classes that 90% of these kids arent going to use, algebra, english, geography, teach them how to surf the web and avoid spam. Regards, Lee |
My daughter was in pre-k this year and had computer classes daily. She regularly went on the Internet, and we were even able to view her progress at school on the Internet.
Yes, this was a private school:-) You get what you pay for (after taxes of course!) |
why don't schools teach kids anything useful?
|
Also - schools should teach kids how to manage their financials, about investing and making it appreciate, etc.
|
How can public schools teach anything about the internet if all the teachers are either scared to use it or just dont know how....its pretty sad when children know how to use technology better and more efficently then teachers/most parents *sigh*
|
Because the kids know more about the internet than the teachers do.
|
Schools are just good for teaching kids how to be average working, credit-debt adults. Sad, isn't it...
I was lucky to have teacher in elementary that were worth a shit, they pushed children using the PC and learning on it. But this was the early 90s and in a relatively poor school system, so there was only but so much a oversized class could do with 2 older computers. Just goes to show even when you have teachers that *do* care, the funding or school conditions hold them back sometimes. |
It's rare that teachers care enough to do that. I mean, for $26,000 a year before taxes you can only care so friggin much.
|
They weren't even around when I went to school..Now I'm sure they are taught all about spyware and pop ups :1orglaugh
|
i went to school in northern california and yes they were teaching us how to be internet savvy... ( translation: how to rip what others have done and adapt it to yourself)
those were the good ol days... |
We had a mandatory course in grade 10 called Life Skills or something. There was 8 weeks on how to fill out income tax forms, invest money, and manage debt. In math 11 we were given 2000$ (imaginary) and told to watch the stocks in the paper every day for two weeks. One kid ended up with 22k. He also won the math award that year.
That was just normal, straight up public school. |

When I was in 8th grade (97/98) we had a web design class. Spent a whole semester making horrible sites with Netscape Composer. But most kids do know more about computers and the Internet than the teachers attempting to teach them.
|
I think internet and computer lessons were already included on academic curriculum now.

all the classes in my sons school have at least 2 PC's in them ... in the younger grades the teachers are younger and know a lot ... they teach them how to look up things on google and they set up email and write to each other. he's going into 3rd grade and i can tell that the older teachers don't know as much ... My brothers daughter is already using front page to build a joke site ... both our kids are 7 and there already learning to find ways around the net nanny ... :Oh crap
