OTTAWA (CP) - It was fought in courtrooms, in legislatures, in street protests, and one of the most turbulent debates in Canadian history was settled Tuesday with a vote in Parliament.

The House of Commons voted to adopt controversial legislation that will make Canada the third country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. Several Liberals marked the occasion by invoking the memory of their party's philosopher king, Pierre Trudeau.

It was the late Liberal prime minister who decriminalized homosexuality in 1969, and whose Charter of Rights and Freedoms became the legal cudgel that smashed the traditional definition of marriage.

Barely two years ago the Liberal government was still fighting same-sex couples in courts across the land.

It changed its tune amid an onslaught of legal verdicts in eight provinces that found traditional marriage laws violated the charter's guarantee of equality for all Canadians.

"(This) is about the Charter of Rights," Prime Minister Paul Martin said earlier Tuesday.

"We are a nation of minorities. And in a nation of minorities, it is important that you don't cherry-pick rights.

"A right is a right and that is what this vote tonight is all about."

More details in a moment.

So i guess Xapster & Cam can finally make it legal...

If you are legally married in Canada and go to the US (For example), would they be obliged to recognize the union?

Good for them BTW

no because the law does not recognize a same sex marriage.

Nope, the US would and has turned people back proclaiming that they do not recognize them as a legally married couple.

I was on the fence with this issue untill I saw a news report about how back in the 60's the christian right was fighting to ban interracial marriages in the name of the bible. I realized its just wrong to tell two people they can't get married, and im sure in the future this will be looked back upon as a something that should have happened so much sooner.

But I still have my doubts about gays/lesbians raising children. I know there are lots of straight couples who are terrible parents, and lots of gays/lesbians would be better parents then them. But my problem is it is basic nature for a child to be raised by a man and a woman. If you have two women, or two men raising a child I think its a screwy situation. But meh, hopefully time will show us that im wrong and it has no profound impact on children. In the end, I suppose all that really matters is the child has loving parents, regardless of their sex.

Congrats to any gays/lesbians who are reading this forum and live here in canada. I apologize to you that it took this long for you to have this fundamental right.

The problem I have with the "gays/lesbians can't raise children" thing is that there's thousands and thousands of children who never get adopted, and grow up in orphanages. Unless it's a healthy white baby, sad fact is that people just don't want it.

People are quick to say "Oh don't let them adopt!" but then no one is willing to step up for the minority children, or ones with some sort've disability.

You know there's a multiple year "waiting list" for healthy white kids? People seek families in need, paying them before the birth to get adoption rights to white kids.

mockingbich 06-29-2005 12:24 AM

HOw much longer until canada breaks apart?

If you don't have a real military you're NOT a real country...

Those canadian politicians are pretty smart. Distract everyone with same sex marriage while they negotiate trade deals in Crawford Texas to economically merge the northern hemisphere and sell out the entire Canadian middle class

So enjoy your gay marriage bullshit
