What harddrive do you reccomend? Maxtor or Western Digital?

I only need a 40gb- 80gb

I've been reading alot on both brands and found problems with both.
A lot of people say Maxtor drives get a lot of bad sectors and Western Digital has complete data loss. I've read several review sites.

If there is another brand that is good let me know, thanks.

SinSational 06-26-2005 04:58 PM

Minte 06-26-2005 05:12 PM

Anything but Maxtor.

We've had 3 of the last 4 Maxtor that we had screw up badly in less than a year after purchase. We've personally never had any major problems with Western Digital, though.

Don't they all have the same internals now?

Spunky 06-26-2005 05:28 PM

I use maxtors and they seem to be running fine

stev0 06-26-2005 06:46 PM

I've heard bad things about maxtor... i buy WD

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 06-26-2005 06:53 PM

I've used external Maxtor drives for scratch disks and back-up for years with my Macs, and have never had a drive fail.

In the past, the drives that either crashed or that I ditched were made by IBM, LaCie, Syquest, and Iomega. I also had one Quantum internal drive die.

I've never tried WD.

Chlamydia or gonorrhea... I pick neither.

Personally I think that Samsung makes the best drives

Theo 06-26-2005 07:00 PM

wallst 06-26-2005 07:05 PM

fuck it dude, if you can afford it, you should really get a SCSI drive.

they can get up to 15000+ RPM you know :pimp :pimp :pimp

ratemysize 06-26-2005 07:06 PM

only hdd thats gone bad on my was my maxtor

prime 06-26-2005 07:38 PM

I used to work for a web hosting a year ago: :)
Between Maxtor & Western Digital = Maxtor
Between Maxtor & Seagate = Seagate

Barefootsies 06-26-2005 07:42 PM

WD all da way.

Been using them for better part of decade, and had 10-12 (dual drives, different PC's). Never had one crash, data loss, or any grief.

:thumbsup

Basic_man 06-26-2005 08:12 PM

I'm using WD for years and never had any major problems !

reynold 06-27-2005 04:55 AM

i don't use Maxtor, Seagate Barracuda is the best for me. :thumbsup

notjoe 06-27-2005 04:56 AM

STAY AWAY FROM MAXT0R!!!!

Their drives seem to fail quite a lot

beta-tester 06-27-2005 05:21 AM

It's almost the same. I have both maxtor and WD. So I'd say, you can buy either maxtor or WD, there is no difference (in my case).

Fucked Beyond Repair 06-27-2005 06:41 AM

I've owned two Maxtors 40GB, both of them broke down before they was 1 year old, I had my entire mp3 collection on one of them :BangBang:

I also have three Western Digital hdds, 80, 120 & 180GB, all of them are still in use and working without problems.

WD raptors !!! all the way
8MB cache, 10000rpm..

marketsmart 06-27-2005 06:45 AM

Had everal Maxtors fail. They seem to very succeptable to heat. I have run up to 500 WD drives with 8MB buffer (get a drive with buffer) and I have never had one fail.

King Porn 06-27-2005 06:54 AM

Agreed, WD with the 8 MB cache.

mardigras 06-27-2005 06:55 AM

I've had 3 maxtors die in the past year, the last one the day after it was installed :(

Sosa 06-27-2005 07:08 AM

I hate maxtor, some people also have probs with Western Digital even though I never have.

Vitasoy 06-27-2005 07:49 AM

From those two... Maxtor... But seagate all the way.

CE_BigB 06-27-2005 07:52 AM

Internal: Western
external: Maxtor

I have roughly 30 external Maxtor drives that are used on a weekly basis and in the last 2 years only 4 failures, for me and how much they are used, that's a pretty good ratio.

All of my Western internals work great, only had one failure out of about 10 drives.

Hope that helps,

Best,

Trixxxia 06-27-2005 07:57 AM

Out of 6 maxtors - all still running great (all internal too) some as old as 5 yrs old (almost 6)

2 Western digital drives both died on the 13th month of very little usage - I'd never buy a WD again - although they replace them quick but they are sitting on my desk cuz I'd never put it back.

FrankWhite 06-27-2005 08:31 AM

seagate !!!!

BillyHoe 06-27-2005 08:42 AM

Maxtor has a better warantee I believe, but personally I think their drives suck. I've had four fail n a span of 14 months and one actually smoked up. I have three WD and one one had a problem but it was 3 or 4 years old. I have a 5 year old seagate still going strong though ;)
