What is the best invention of human kind?

The wheel.
In second place, electricity.

What's your opinion?

Its pretty hard to single out one or two. Every invention is based off of a prior invention or idea due to a new "need".

Every century has a few inventions that have drastically changed life.

Electricity. Telephone. Computers. This century will probably be wireless capability... true it was around last century, but this century it is really going to explode and change lives a great deal. The way we share information has drastically changed over the past 20 years.

tits are not an invention... unless you refer to plastic ones.

Another one that I think is great: money.
Where would we be if we had to trade porn for goats in the public market? ;)

The wheel certainly qualifies as an invention. However, electricity is not an invention. It is a discovery.

- If it didn't exist before someone created it - it is an invention

- If it did exist before someone found it - it is a discovery

Looking at the history of civilization, electricty had the most dramatic effect on our progress forward, and that led to the lightbulb and the telephone, two other big ones. The automobile changed everything also.

I don't know if you could say language is an invention. That was just us evolving and tweaking our grunts when we were apes.

In this past century the transistor and integrated circuit enabled the modern era of computers to begin.

Steam engine brought about the industrial revolution.

The development of paper and then the printing press were big ones for communications as well as radio, TV and now the Internet.

In transportation, the airplane was huge.

Lasers, nuclear power, air conditioning all significant inventions.

Looking at all of them I still say electricity is numero uno.

pornguy 06-25-2005 07:48 PM

I agree with you, KRL. But please leave TV out. I think (and I'm sure a lot of people will agree with me) that TV has been detrimental to man kind, and still is.

No way. TV has been instrumental to the sharing of knowledge and information. TV is one of the key reasons so many people are so horrified of war. Opinions of war before and after Nam are drastically different, Nam was the first war on TV.

the best inventions for humans have to do with food, shelter, health, and energy production---most of these "inventions" happened within the last 100 years, which is a nanosecond on the timeline of human development.

there are many examples, such as:

salk vaccine
organized and efficient farming
managed forestry as a renewable resource
organized commercial fishing and preservation
oil and gas exploration
nuclear fusion
solar heating
harnessing wave and wind power
etc
etc

Money is another that wasn't truly an invention, but rather an evolvement of trading things. If I grew and traded apples and you grew and traded oranges and someone else grew and traded watermelons, eventually they all figured it would be easier just to trade metals to represent a specific value for exchanging things.

Rob 06-25-2005 08:16 PM

The Atomic Bomb.

sickkittens 06-25-2005 08:17 PM

Great inventions are (to me) things that probably wouldn't have come up if that 1 person (or group of people) never invented.

i.e. a wheel, bike, money, weapons, etc. would be invented eventually
