Godfather or Apocalypse Now?

I just don't see how the Godfather should be rated higher. Honestly, "AN" has every element that a great movie would have.

Cinematography, acting, plot, deeper meaning, bigtime actors......seems to encompass them all.

I threw in the Redux version this evening and watched.

I have said for years that Apocalypse Now is the greates movie ever made by far. I just don't see any films around that have even come close.

Marlon brando is a god

ProjectNaked 06-25-2005 06:09 PM

Isn't that nuts?

Both of them.

Both of the movies have stellar cast.

I agree with that. All time.

I love the opening scene as well. Supposedly he really busted his hand open.

It helps that Coppola directed both. But my nod goes to AN.

No! -- did not know that. Was that covered in Heart of Darkness -- ? -- I was surprised enough to learn that Harvey Keitel, not only got the Willard role, but that production commenced with him in the role -- and Coppola decided it wasn't working -- NOW THAT'S BALLS -- not to mention commitment to one's creative vision. I see Francis at his restauant in SF all the time. Great man.

Cory, I have "Hearts of darkness" on video. I'll try (I'm from hollywood, so that doen't mean a whole lot) to make a copy for you to watch. I need to get it onto a DVD anyway since it only came out on video.

It's a documentary on AN.... FUCKIN' CRAZY what they went thru to film that. How fucked up Brando was, how drunk Martin was during the breakdown scene, and yes he did really cut himself open.

The catch phrase on the box is, "Filming was supposed to last 16 weeks. One year later it was far from over"

swoop 06-25-2005 06:50 PM

godfather by far...casino was better than AN

Spunky 06-25-2005 07:08 PM

I liked Apocalypse Now way better

That would be awesome, I have never seen "Heart of Darkness..."

That all time movie list...whatever that is...list Godfather as 1, AN as 2.

I just don't see how AN isn't 1.

Downtime 06-25-2005 07:20 PM

haven't seen "AN", so gonna have to go with the Godfather

The horse head scene is nothing compared to a few scenes in AN. You should go rent it.

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 06-25-2005 07:23 PM

I think the Godfather was much better.

I like Apocalypse Now, however it just seemed very disjointed the first time I saw it, while Godfather was an instant classic.

I've actually watched AN more times than the Godfather (including Redux, the Director's Cut), mostly to try and comprehend it better.

I think the fact that I liked Mario Puzo's book better than Joseph Conrad's also has something to do with it.

AN is way more complex movie. Menages to pack a lot of art in 2 hours..

If you're into art movies, I seriosly recommend watching "Before the rain"

MikeVega 06-25-2005 07:31 PM

Very soon we will be giving away The Godfather Box set as rewards to affiliates ... so watch for it and make sure you signed up for Mobbucks.com .. :thumbsup

They're both really good. The fucked up thing is, they are NOT in the same category. One is mafia, one is war. They both have incredible characters and character arcs, and both are about self exploration. But they are two different movies.

They should both be #1 in their own right.

mkx 06-25-2005 07:52 PM

I really didn't like AN

hehe i've been saying the exact same since 2001 here

you know what's crazy? I was going to see it again today, but there was another vietnam movie on tv and changed my mind.

oh wait Apocalypse Now wasn't about vietnam, it was the vietnam as Coppola said hehe :)

Wiggles 06-25-2005 07:59 PM

i don't like the redux version, that dinner party was fucking stupid.

The political bearing it held however was not only fascinating, but true to form today :)

Fizzgig 06-25-2005 08:52 PM

I've never seen Apocalypse Now. No vote.

Loryn 06-25-2005 09:09 PM

Godfather! :thumbsup

Lee 06-26-2005 02:51 AM

I love them both and I also agree that the helicopter scene is a classic. The atmosphere created by Ride of the Valkyries is incredible. However I would still pick Godfather above it.

Incidentally, I think Godfather 2 was better, I also really enjoyed 3 despite the universal panning it took.

SinisterStudios 06-26-2005 05:38 AM

I love both, but The Godfather is still one of the the best (if not THE best) movie there is hands down

Evil Chris 06-26-2005 06:11 AM

I've always been a fan of Apocalypse Now. I'd take it any day over the Godfather.

But I didn't like the redux version. I felt that it didn't do the original any justice at all.

Rui 06-26-2005 06:43 AM

While I love Apocalypse Now, Godfather is THE thing!

Minte 06-26-2005 06:45 AM

I just saw AN a few weeks ago, first time in many many years. It was still a great movie.Martin Sheen looked like such a kid though.

Yeah, and from that very same scene Martin Sheen suffered a near death heart attack. It's all in that aforementioned greatest documentary ever made about a movie, "Hearts Of Darkness."

I only have Redux at my place...can hardly remember the original...

Gothfather rules!!!

nicchick 06-26-2005 07:25 PM

Both great movies but AN stuck with me a lot longer. Would score AN a 9.9 with Godfather a 9.5

reynold 06-26-2005 07:49 PM

I have seen The God Father onxce and i was already convinced then that it's one of Hollywood's greatest films.

BIGTYMER 06-26-2005 08:03 PM

Godfather! :)

reynold 06-27-2005 04:58 AM
