India = Next Global Superpower?

Excerpt:

In essence, India lacks China's weaknesses. One commentator sees India as the better bet in the long run, with a lower likelihood of civil unrest due to political reform. India also has no comparable demographic problems. Its economic and foreign polices do not put it on a potential collision course with the world's current super power. In fact, the goals of both nations are converging. India's only major foreign policy problem appears to be almost solved, leaving the country without any significant enemies. And with a population that uses English for government and business, India is plugged into a world economy where English is the lingua franca.

Your thoughts?

A super power with people who wipe with their hand, and who still have a caste system? Cool!

Actually once they start to become "super" in any way Pakistan will go all Muslim and nuke them.

Maybe. China certainly has significant internal long-term political issues to address but has a big head start with an economy twice as large as India's and is also growing faster giving it a further head-start.

But remember the 80s when everyone couldn't stop talking about up-and-coming Japan? Then in the 90s the Nikkai went South and the economy went deflationary with a real slow-down in GDP. The larger the economy the more difficult growth becomes. The US is unique in being in the top ten in GDP and GDP per capita.
