Anyone using a notebook as a desktop ?

I just started to setup a little office and instead of buying a new machien I thougth I'd just get a monitor, keyboard and stuff and plug my Sony VGN-S360 in and use it.. is this a bad idea ?

I remember years back I tried to do this with a Z600-tek and I think it overheated being left on for weeks and never worked right really

With this new sony I can set it to hibernate after 30mins not being used so it should be ok ?

I use mine as a desktop but with no additions (except a mouse). I also just bought a cooler for the bottom of it. It's been over a year and so far, so good (until I spilled diet Dr. Pepper on the keyboard - waiting for the replacement on that too........)!

I used mine as a desktop for several months at a time. Worked out just fine.

I've used mine for over a year now. I've added a keyboard and mouse to it, even though I like the notebook keyboard much more. Only thing that annoys me a little bit is that the fan has gotten louder (dust on it?).

I use my IBM R50 as a desktop to everything but videoediting. It even run WM-ware with 2 servers when Im testing new setups. I got a 80 Gig fast (5400 rpm 8 mb cache) disk to replace the slow one that came with it, and a dockingstation. that way I always got everything with me when moving around in the country

I used to run a laptop as my desktop, and i noticed they burned out faster than a normal desktop. I am pretty tough on computers, and my laptops were burning out and starting to crash frequently after about 10-11 mos.

I use a laptop as a desktop..

I got a p4 3.2GHZ w/17" widescreen. I've had it for a little over a year and it should be good for a few more (hopefully).

I love being able to take extended trips and know i have everything with me to fix whatever problems come up :)

i've seen laptop style keyboards for desktops, wireless. BestBuy or similar places sell them. I was thinking of getting one for myself.

It depends on what you do , if you do heavy video a desktop would serve you better.

taibo 06-14-2005 07:42 AM

i use my laptop as a desktop, i edit video along with every other task on it....every 3 months or so I have to open it up and clean the fans out though, cause they can get pretty gunked up with shit.....amazing how much crap flows through the fan, takes me like 10 minutes of cleaning and it creates a pile like 1 inch wide next to me

CLEAN THE FANS!!! something people rarely do, and your laptops run SO much faster when you are done!

I have used a 17" Powerbook G4 for more than 2 years, it is on 22 hours a day the other 2 hours it is being hauled in a backpack between office and home. Works great.

I use my Sager as desktop pretty much. Just use a mouse instead of the touchpad.

TDF 06-14-2005 10:14 AM

guilty as charged...go dell!

Herb Kornfield 06-14-2005 10:16 AM

I use a laptop 12 hours a day as my main "business" machine and a old Dell Desktop as my sterero and "home" machine....

I prefer a laptop since I have taken this all over the world with me and can get to anything that I need anywhere anyplace....

I have used my 17" for two years as my desktop as well... That's why I purchased the larger display PB. I just plug a mouse into it and it works great. I never turn it off unless I have to. It usually just sits with the screen saver on, unless I close it for some reason.

Notebooks have become pretty damn powerful over the years. Would be fine to replace desktop with it :thumbsup
