On the local radio call-in show, some of the guesses were:

furnace filter

lightbulb inside fridge

the box of fridge deodorizer (baking soda) that people keep in their fridge

toilet paper roll (always leaving it for the next person)

I believe it took about 20 callers before the right answer of "Answering machine message" was given.
