Parents jailed over fairytale row

A German court has jailed two parents who refused to allow their child to go on a school trip to see a theatre production of a fairytale.

The parents claimed the children's play of the Brothers Grimm's King Thrushbeardthe was "a work of the devil".

They were jailed for six days by the court in Guetersloh, western Germany, after they refused to pay a fine for keeping their child away from the school trip.

King Thrushbeard tells the story of a beautiful princess taught humility by being married off by her father to a beggar who is really a wealthy prince in disguise.

Jailed for not paying the fine. You can either pay a fine or go to jail instead, whatever you prefer :)

isn't that the parent's perogative? I mean, parents are supposed to sign "permission slips" and stuff for kids to go with the school to these places... so it's supposed to be the parent's decision. Not the courts.

Yes, in Germany they have a thing called compulsory education. They kept their children away from school and were thus fined.

shit, no wonder parents don't parent their children anymore. Now the legal system is undermining their ability to make decisions for their children to the extreme.

German law states any child has to go to school for at LEAST 9 years. Its law, they HAVE to go. You do not have to pay for it either. If the parents deny them that they have to pay a fine. If you do not go to school too often as a kid, your parents also have to pay a fine.

These plays might be school trips, but the reason the US has "permission slips" is liability. no?. The teachers are liable in germany anyway though. But the school trips are PART of education, you can not deny them to go. You do not pay for it either.
