OMGs...look what came in the house tonight!

I had the door cracked open so that my husband and daughter could get back in. I heard them coming so I looked over at the door and this li tle baby came walking in, scared, shivering and dehydrated. Not sure how old it is, but it only weighs about 4 oz. or so....

Well, I guess we will get it rehydrated and then start feeding it. Get it healthy and weighing over a half pound, and then take it to the jungle and release it :)

It is so cute...I've never seen one before. We raised a raccoon before, so I'm hoping this is just as fun :)

dirtydesignz 06-12-2005 09:33 AM

She made it thru the night! Now we are off to get lactated ringers to get her rehydrated.

Machete_ 06-12-2005 09:51 AM

get rid of it before it scratches you.. they are all infectet with germs... do NOT get attached to it.. Killing it would be the best for all of you...

GFX Wiz 06-12-2005 09:53 AM

Oppossum are so freaking mean and nasty when they mature -- don't get too attached :2 cents:

Lucky rat. Is she going to breastfeed it?

CrazyNakedChick 06-12-2005 10:24 AM

Awww, widdle baby 'possum, how cute. :)

Us kids used to raise newborn 'pussums and 'coons on the farm, they make great pets if handled frequently and lovingly (looks like you guys have that covered, hehe). Give it a nice warm sterile bath (mild soap and salt) and get a rabbit cage, ferret pellets make great food for them. :thumbsup

edit: typo

Yep, we raised a coon too:) He was awesome and so smart. From everything I've read about opossums, they are more resilient to rabies than any other mammal. And they are cleaner than cats or dogs and carry less diseases that them too:) I'm not worried in the slightest about her getting mean.

I'm not planning on keeping her as a pet really (but who knows), we just want to get her to where she is healthy and can make it on her own...it's the right thing to do :)

Ferret pellets...just saw those at the store:) In Mexico it's hard to get the things we could in the US..but since we were ranchers for so long, my husband is good with vet work, so he will do the sub q rehydration...if we can find the lactated ringers :)

Yes indeedy, they are very clean, always preening their coats and faces. Consider looking online for the proper formula and have it shipped right to you, but you should be able to get away with human baby mix in the meantime if you can find it locally.

How awesome of you guys, really. 'Possums get an unwarranted bad rap, best of luck to you both. :thumbsup :thumbsup

PurrrsianPussyKat 06-12-2005 11:14 AM

We just did the first sub q injection of lactated ringers...hopefully she will perk up in no time :)

CrazyNakedChick 06-12-2005 01:19 PM

With that kind of love and attention, I am sure she will.

*Note to self, if I am ever reincarnated as an orphaned animal make sure I end up between....err, I mean make sure I end up at Lizzie's doorstep. >;-)

kill the bastard!

Sly 06-12-2005 01:23 PM

If you're feeding and nurturing it now, how exactly do you expect it to live and fend for itself once you release it?

Opossum

The opossum is a very fat animal with a peculiarly flavored meat. It is dressed much as one would dress a suckling pig (page 192), removing the entrails, and, if desired, the head and tail. After it has been dressed, wash thoroughly inside and out with hot water. Cover with cold water to which has been added 1 cup of salt. Allow to stand overnight; in the morning, drain off the salted water and rinse well with clear, boiling water.

'Possum and Sweet 'Taters

1 opossum
Salt
1 quarter water
4 slices of bacon
Bread Stuffing (page 43)
8 small sweet potatoes

Scald possum in lye water and scrape off the hair, taking care not to break the skin. Dress whole, leaving on head and tail. Rub inside and out with salt; let stand in cool place overnight. Place breast-up in roaster, add 1 quart water, place 3 or 4 slices of bacon across breast, cover closely and bake in moderate oven (350 degrees F.) 45 minutes. Fill with Bread Stuffing (page 43) moistened with juice from roaster, surround with sweet potatoes and bake uncovered until very tender and well browned, about 1 hour. Allow 1/3 pound per person.

Stuffing

1 tablespoon butter, 1 large chopped onion, opossum liver (optional), 1 cup break crumbs, chopped red pepper, dash or Worcestershire sauce, 1 hard-cooked egg (chopped fine), salt, water

Melt butter in frying pan and add onion. When it begins to brown, add finely chopped liver of opossum, if desired, and cook until the liver is tender and well done. Add bread crumbs, a little red pepper, Worcestershire sauce, egg, salt and water to moisten. Stuff opossum; sew opening or fasten with skewers. Place in roaster, add 2 tablespoons water and roast in moderate oven (350 F) until very tender and richly browned, about 1 and 1/2 hours. Baste every 15 minutes with drippings. Remove skewers or stitches, and place opossum on heated platter. Skim fat from gravy remaining in pan; serve gravy separately. Serve with baked yams or sweet potatoes. If head has been left intact, place a red apple or a baked sweet potato in the mouth. Serves about 10.
Bon apetit...er I mean appetit,

Well, getting to the point where she can eat food on her own is a good start and then introducing food that she will find in the jungle area here....

At this point, I just feel like it's the right thing to do and that is just the kind of person I am...
