Is "tivo" available in Canada or isn't it?

So far the only place I've heard about it let alone seen one is here on GFY. I hear it edits out commercial breaks...... that alone is the main reason why I even bring up the subject. I so want one based on that function.

In fact, I want to secure the Canadian distribution rights. :D

I have not seen it in stores here yet. Do any of you know anything about anything to do with this? Will I get hogtied and cattle-prodded at the border if I'm caught bringing back a trunk-load of tivos?

I've got it. Love it.

Dunno whether you can get a legit install though..

I don't believe TIVO is available in Canada but several cable companies offer a very close equivalent. I personally have a Rogers High Definition PVR (personal video recorder) which does basically the same thing... I am actually watching it right now and it's totally changed the way I watch TV :)

Only thing I can't figure out is how to stop recording the commercials, but luckily there is a fast forward option. :)

Why would TiVo want Canadian sales? Theyd get what... 2?

SilverTab 06-08-2005 07:52 PM

You can hack it...but you can't have it legally...

however you can get a machine on ebay and check out http://www.tivocanada.com/ for a detailed explanation to hack it

Nice.. Im pretty sick of Bell ExpressVu, it sucks ass .. miss my Dish Network... should have never cancelled it.

Pipecrew 06-08-2005 08:07 PM

I love tivo, it really is the cats ass.. You can do all kinds of crazy shit, like if you like comedy movies, it can record them all, or if you like movies with some actress or actor it can record them...

Without Tivo, i would not have the all the chris farley movies and Dog The Bounty Hunter Episodes.

BIGTYMER 06-08-2005 08:22 PM

TiVo rocks! DirecTV sent me two by mistake, when I only ordered one. :)

Bell and Starchoice both offer PVR based satellite receivers. I don't think they use the actual "Tivo" service though. Not sure how they would compare, but I assume they would be almost the same.

I just bought a new Bell system, but their PVR's don't have HDTV built in them yet, so I just went with the HDTV receiver instead. Apparently they are coming out with one that has HDTV and a PVR built in shortly. I think StarChoice just released one of those too. (or it will be out this month if it isn't already)

The crap the cable companies come out with is no where near Tivo, i've used both, for instance with Tivo you can go back atleast 30 minutes, on cable the most i could do was like 4 minutes.

I imagine it will get better eventually, but who knows.

I remember reading somewhere that the first Bell PVR was very buggy too. Don't know if that was fixed yet or not. Hopefully the new HDTV ones they are coming out with are more comparable to Tivo.

we have the modified system like Time Warner has with the DVR, never tried it though.
