Fuck you MAXTOR and your POS drives - I'm RMA'ing 3 200GB drives today :(

Thanks for costing me countless hours of ripping video so i can store it on your drives which fail after a couple of months of usage,

I used to think your drives were good but i was wrong :(

From now on its only Seagate drives for me... i rather spend a little more on the drive and know it isnt going to die in a few months.

NTSS 06-07-2005 08:35 AM

That's fucked...a couple months? damn!

tony286 06-07-2005 08:35 AM

notjoe 06-07-2005 08:36 AM

yup, i loaded them up with ripped DVD content..left them in the machine and BAMN...dead...I wasnt even running the drives hard either :(

Juicy D. Links 06-07-2005 08:37 AM

I use Seagate Drives. Never a prob with em

Juicy D. Links 06-07-2005 08:37 AM

whats RMA btw?

Juicy D. Links 06-07-2005 08:38 AM

notjoe there are a few good datarecovery places around that can help ya out

Jace 06-07-2005 08:38 AM

i have always gotten western digital and never had troubles, never had to RMA one

Adam-EB 06-07-2005 08:38 AM

I had a Maxtor with a site I was working on from my laptop. I had the one and only copy on the Maxtor drive. I took it to our office, hooked it up to my main mahcine there, and it was dead. Nothing. Two weeks worth of work completely lost. I'll never use Maxtor again. The drive was only a month or so old.

Snake Doctor 06-07-2005 08:38 AM

Interesting....I'm going to be buying some large external drives in the next couple of days to store "copies of depictions" on to comply with 2257.

Maxtor's a no-no?

Juicy D. Links 06-07-2005 08:38 AM

the data must be juicy so send em to dat recovery yo all might not be lost

Juicy D. Links 06-07-2005 08:39 AM

I like Seagate yo. No clue why but no probs with em whatsoeer.

I'm not overly concerned about the data on the drives as i still have the original DVDS here..I'll hire some student to come in and rip all the shit again...im more annoyed than anything :(

Juicy D. Links 06-07-2005 08:39 AM

Barracuda Cheetaaaaaaa they have cool names also

Quickdraw 06-07-2005 08:40 AM

I had one that I thought went bad, moved the firewire plug to a different slot and it worked again.(Just putting it out there in case you haven't tried it)

Sounds like a pain with that much data :/

Very nice drives but very pricey if you're looking for mass storage...

I got WD Raptors with 4.5ms stripped for the STB database ;)

notjoe 06-07-2005 08:43 AM

these drives are ATA133 (IDE) drives which are internally stored...The problem with these drives (or so i think) is that they run extremely hot and when you pack 4 of them into a machine i guess it becomes too much..

Very strange since my computer room a 10,000BTU AC firing on the computers to keep them cool :)

Doc911 06-07-2005 08:44 AM

I've have maxtors that are years old and still working great. Same with any drive really. I've had to RMA more WD's than anything else. Of course all manufactures have bad drives occasionally

flashfreak 06-07-2005 08:48 AM

seagate all the way!

Maybe its an issue with the 7200 RPM drives?

Thanks for the tip on WD, i'll stay away from them ;)

I have 4 120GB seagate drives which are a year or two old and run perfectly.. they've even taken a lot of punishment as i use them to encode content off of...im thinking i'll stick to seagate :)

FiReC 06-07-2005 08:51 AM

check your power supply, i went through 5 maxtor 160 gigs in a year and it ended up being a shitty power supply.

Jim_Gunn 06-07-2005 12:24 PM

I have five Maxtor 1-Touch hd's that I use for video editing daily and some have been running for over a year, knock on wood!

boner 2.0 06-07-2005 12:31 PM

Sorry for your loss :( I had 2 (out of 3) Maxtor's hard disk diying  Fucking trash :321GFY I won't buy Maxtor again. Seagate or WD for me :2 cents:

Sosa 06-07-2005 12:31 PM

maxtor fucking suck...

Project-Shadow 06-07-2005 12:38 PM

I've had to RMA 1 Maxtor, and 2 Western Digitals.. i'm still running Maxtor :(

tranza 06-07-2005 12:43 PM

unless you have a nice server grade case you should never have 4 drives in 1 machine 99% of cases cant handle it.

its your fault as much as maxtor's that you have dead drives.

AgentCash 06-07-2005 01:02 PM

The only drives I've had totally die on me were Maxtor drives. WD & Seagate have both been great thus far.

4U rackmounts with two nice big fans in the front... i also have those 3 fan drive things which sit infront of the drives....still my fault? I think not.

taibo 06-07-2005 02:16 PM

not your fault then.

thought you had one of those $40 cases with 4 drives in them.

Azlord 06-07-2005 02:19 PM

Thought I had a couple of harddrives crash one me. Bought a new one and tried to install windows on it. Froze again. Took it in and it was the controller card on the motherboard. So a new motherboard later everything is fine!

when you sandwich them together like that any drive will fuck up. i suggest you get a nice full tower with a shit load of bays and use harddrive coolers. trust me that will save you money.

WarChild 06-07-2005 02:33 PM

I've had a string of Maxtor failures on 120 and 160 gig drives. At least 5 in the last 2 years.

inabon 06-07-2005 02:36 PM

also a 10k btu ac could be very little depending on room size and shit you have in there.

we use a 35k btu at the office our office is roughly 20' x 20' 3 work stations and 3 people all the time

1 file server running :)
