Hell's Kitchen

Anyone catch this on Fox tonight?
12 contestants broken into 2 teams are competing to be the last one standing who will win "the restaurant of their dreams".

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramesy takes the Simon Cowellesque asshole role to new lows throwing plates in the garbage or shoving then into the chests of the contestants while spouting enough "sailor talk" to make sure he's bleeped at least once every sentence.

After watching the 2 episodes tonight I think Mr. Ramesy is a total asshat :1orglaugh. Has nothing to do with the way he treated these contestants, afterall, that is the premise of the show, it's funny and there are few of these contestants even remotely likeable anyway. For all the talk he did of ethics and proper behavior he violated the one rule restaurants (and most businesses) live and die by, the customer is king.

I know he was playing up to the cameras and the customers were bound to be aware that it was a game show (although that was never said....the show did however say he has been voted UK's top chef many years in a row), but this "professional" told one female customer who nicely inquired after waiting over 2 hours and 45 minutes for service, "Why don't you <bleeped> fuck off?" Earlier he told an attractive blonde customer to go back to plastic surgery.

He plays off all the nastiness as his method of bringing out the best in chefs, but I know I will always remember him more for his shitty attitude towards customers (bet he wouldn't say these things in a real setting... wonder how many others who saw this will when choosing restaurants? I'd think it a pretty bad career move for someone supposedly a country's top chef; but who knows, maybe he no longer needs income from restaurants :upsidedow

I love that show. Having worked in many kitchens in the past if you have not experienced the heat it really has no comparison. Tempers flare but everyone knows the chef is the boss and it is hs way or the highway. Ramsey is a a kitchen God and he has earned that title. I can name many a chef that is much worse than him.

I bet he wouldn't tell a polite customer waiting for nearly 3 hours to fuck off in a restaurant he has financial responsibility for :1orglaugh

I still can't believe he'd want the reputation of feeling that way towards customers, even if it is just a TV ruse.

I missed it tonight but I saw it last week and liked it.

Kassidy 06-06-2005 11:08 PM

He's completely verbally abusive to both his staff and the customers. But please...it's tv.

Plus, having worked in the hotel F&B industry for many years, it's almost realistic. Chefs are dickheads, plain and simple. They also get more pussy than I've ever seen before. Chicks love assholes...we all know that.

I guess being a formally trained chef and having ran 3 kitchens I am a dickhead. Now where is the pussy? :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

I saw part of it, looks interesting.

EviLGuY 06-06-2005 11:15 PM

I thought it was boring.. and a rather annoying premise for a show.

I've worked in restaurants. Never once did I ever see a chef or owner cuss out a customer who didn't deserve it. I'm sure during the filming of this they could have found enough assholes for him to lock horns with, not just insulting everyone he encounters, especially as polite as these were.

Like I said... I guess he's beyond worrying about the income from restaurants. :upsidedow

Everybody on the show was annoying. I have maybe one person on there I could root for and it wouldn't take much for me to turn on them too :1orglaugh

reynold 06-06-2005 11:58 PM

It's a pretty entertaining show!

Sarah_Jayne 06-07-2005 06:49 AM

Ramsey is like that in real life to his real staff.

Ah, another great British export.

NTSS 06-07-2005 06:51 AM

Another reality tv show...they will never end

CIVMatt 06-07-2005 07:01 AM

I liked it, watched both of them, thought it was funny

FunForOne 06-07-2005 07:30 AM

I actually liked it, but I have to warn you guys.

If you are watching these reality shows and thinking there is actual reality involved, you are not aware of the entire picture.

Behind the cameras are producers cueing the customers and the participants to perform pre arranged "stunts".

You forget that those customers are sitting in a resturant with a camera pointed in their face filming them for a "reality show", its not like it was a surprise to them what was going to happen.

Also, if you think that the producers of american idol counted the phoned in votes and picked the winners based on that, you are just as naive.

sickkittens 06-07-2005 07:51 AM

Looks pretty stupid to me. But that's just me.

LittleSassy 06-07-2005 07:53 AM

yup! lol i was a cook for 4 yrs, and when we got slammed with orders, it became a fuckin nightmare to cook in that kitchen. tempers flarred, ALOT of swearing & slamming shit around, attitudes & degrading comments all around....its the hardest part of being a cook. if you cant handle the verbal abuse you get (and give back) from others, then you're not meant to be a cook. I've seen cooks, both male & female, cry & quit in the middle of their shifts.
