Who uses a Xeon as a Workstation?
I'm thinking about buying a Dell Precision 670 with a 3.2 Ghz Dual Xeon to use it as a Workstation.
Normally, Xeons are only used in Servers. Is anybody on GFY using it as a workstation as well? Are you happy with it (long-term experience)? Do you think it's worth the extra money? :pimp |
Work has me on a dual pentium 2ghz xeon (500 megs ram) for the past couple of years as my workstation - it's pretty fast and stable. However, my single pentium HT machine (1 gig ram) at home seems to work just as well. In my opinion, I don't think it would be worth the money.

I got a IBM Mpro with dual Xeon 2.4 gig and 2 gigs of ram.. The 15k rpm scsi makes a little noise, but its FAST. IT's one of the vidoeediting station that one of my customers dident pay for :-(
But that is not connectet to the network, its only for work.. NO play. It got 2 software installed Discreet edit, and adome premier = all the codes... but NOHING else |

thats one helluva number cruncher for that. those mpeg's can take a good long time to batch |
I have 3 Dual Xeon Workstations, 2 compaq w8000's and 1 hp xw8000 We use them for running avid editing suites on them. If your running video editing work you need the xeon's they just make life easier and render much faster

Can't wait for the Athlon 64 X2 to come out..
it's a P4 killer |

We recently picked up a Dual Xeon. Waiting to render out some stuff on it, seems to be pretty quick and stable...
More use of it will tell.... But I think it all depends on how many apps you plan on running... couldn't hurt if you can afford it. |
