Be honest...you had a great idea but the project was never completed?

How many of us here had some great ideas (or what seemed like one at the time) and bought domains and stuff to get it going but it never quite happened?

    List your ideas and regrets.

you are better off canceling a project when you realize half-way through that it will not be profitable enough.

don't finish a project just because you started it.

ugh, I'm actually in the middle of a project of which I'm doubting if I should finish it... mainly because the programmer lacks any form of communication

Yep I came into this biz after being out of it for 2.5 years. Had some great ideas and spent $50k US on mistakes that didn't work out.

But mistakes they were not, they were learning tools and you just have to look into the things you can learn. I learnt a lot and grew as a business man during that time. Now I make sure when I come up with the ideas I follow through and I make sure they are researched well enough that they succeed wonderfully. Or if they don't then my risk to them will be minimial.

Very common in the internet industry.

Reminds of the old guy in the hardware store looking at drills. The employee comes up to him and start explaining the specs of each drill. This one comes with blah, blah blah, but this one has blah, blah, blah.

He gets finished and ask the old timer what kind of drill he needs.

The old man responded, "I dont need a drill, I need a hole."

I spent a heap of time working on an idea a year or two ago. Right near the completion of the project, i took a step back and looked at how things were going and realised it was a bunch of bollocks. I think the idea was solid, but i wasted a lot of time with shitty programmers who had their own ideas about how the thing was supposed to be. In the end, i just lost interest and shelved it. Ahh well.

                            Frustrating.
Not good to hear over the years how many people raise complaints about programmers and their lack of contact / availability and at times the unprofessional attitude.

To be fair though...this is common in every walk of life.

It was my own fault really. I didn't shop around enough. But it was extremely frustrating. I would tell them "this is what i want" and they would reply with "yes, but we know people prefer it like this". They couldn't grasp the idea that this other way simply wouldn't work with what i was trying to achieve, and even after i told them not to do their own thing, they went ahead and did it, and then claimed they needed an extra 2 weeks to get rid of all the extra shit they put in that i didn't want. It was just a massive balls up.

I asked the question because you only have to hear why the majority of people are selling a domain, a site or program..."no time and too much on my plate already"

Most of us I think have been guilty of this at one time or another.

Has happened a half dozen times.

Get a new cool idea you can't get out of your head, get a burr up your ass, and go register domain, and start development with or without the business model, or plan. Just the idea in your head. Next thing you know life throw's a curve, the adreniline wears off, and idea stagnates.

If it's not that, then it's the time factor. Something else comes up, or whatever. Some of them are decent ideas, which I will keep to myself.

I spent almost 3 years building a network of websites, interlinking domains, online stores, tgps, link lists etc etc etc. Everytime a project was near completion it was shut down. Everytime an online store made a sale it was refunded. Everytime a domain started getting getting traffic is was redirected effectively killing all traffic. He went from over 100k hits a day to 16.. thats 16 not 16k.

The owner didn't and still doesnt have a clue as to what he's doing. The other programmer he had working for him finally gave up. I stuck with it for a while hoping he would catch snap but I guess he never will. All his domains now point to a simple page with a few links that all redirect back to the same page. Kind of a cicle jerk with no point.

what a waste of time and creativity.

I have had many many ideas, bought the domains and just didn't get the funds together and whatnot. The few ideas I "Shared" with others, 2 out of 3 of them started a similar site to my idea within a couple of months.

The worst is when you abandon a project then someone else hits it big with a similar idea. As an author, I've seen this happen on book projects I've worked on - I see something and think, that's going to hot, I should write about that, then someone else does and it's huge.

Sigh. Can't have everything. Where would you put it?

Reminds of the old guy in the hardware store looking at drills. The employee comes up to him and start explaining the specs of each drill. This one comes with blah, blah blah, but this one has blah, blah, blah.

He gets finished and ask the old timer what kind of drill he needs.

The old man responded, "I dont need a drill, I need a hole."
