PlayaDRM is going away...

What are the alternatives to them? They did a great job, and I hate to see them go away.

GigoloJustin 06-05-2005 04:00 PM

Are they really?

GigoloJustin 06-05-2005 04:00 PM

Tucker... you're needed in this thread.

My source is not 100% reliable, so I hope I am not starting false drama.

Brad Mitchell 06-05-2005 06:05 PM

Gone. No more. Deceased. It is a dead Playa

Only question now is..

We sell turn key DRM systems with source. The advantange of this is.

1. You get the source code, C# and well commented
2. You own the MySQL data base with all the encryption keys
3. The DRM URL is yours. (E.g. drm.yourdomain.com) instead of 3rd party so you are not locked in.
4. You host it on your server, all you need is a Win 2000 or 2003 Server

This way you control every thing and do not need to worry about if a company will stay in business or not. Our solution is not for every as the system cost 5K ? 10K depending on what you need. We have been developing DRM systems for some time, complete client list can be found at www.objectcube.com

Source would be the email they sent out to clients, they are closing in 10 days.

Just got the email today... says 10 days and they are down. Basically, I think, and this is just pure speculation, "someone" fucked them up and they can't re-coop.

First off I'm sorry to hear a fellow service has bit the dust because of something as stupid as infighting.

As a shameless plug for our own service please take a peek at Vidlock. www.vidlock.com.

We support client-side encoding (meaning you don't have to upload every file to a server and then re-download it to encode it). A 20 MB file on a P4 2.06 GHZ computer with 512 RAM takes approximately 8 seconds to encode. All you need is a Windows XP computer with Windoes Media Player 9 and our custom encoding application.

We support server-to-server communication for acquiring licenses. Meaning you can be running on any platform and not need a Windows server. This allows you to tightly integrate the DRM service into your existing website/billing system.

Accounts are free for up to 50 licenses per month (primarily for prototyping) $2.99 the first month, and $24.99 afterwards. Paid accounts are allowed up to 30,000 licenses per month.

No setup fees.

Our client list includes custom DRM consultation for some of the largest names in the business including Napster and Movielink.

Alternatively if you're looking for general DRM information or some starter guides to setting up your own service please check out our partner blob at www.drmspace.com

Their are a lot of good DRM providers. Before you get one you need to make sure what happens if they go out of business or you decide to pull out. If you encrypt your movies using their own DRM URL (Every time a movie is played it needs to get a license and for that it needs a URL to go to) then you are locked in.

Its like you starting a site and renting the domain name from the ISP. Will you do that ?
