.xxx domains ARE censorship
An opinion from someone unassociated with the adult porn industry:
While there may be some value in ANYONE being able to have a .xxx domain, Federal or local requirements that all adult material have this extension is outright dangerous, to both free speech and free trade.
To begin with, individual states, counties, or cities could, feasibily, make efforts to outright block access to .xxx domains.
More importantly, it would give an edge to companies or webmasters outside of the reach of governments that might regulate the .xxx domains... in that while, say, adult webmasters inside the US might follow any laws that require use of the .xxx domain, folks in countries that don't have the same laws will go on profiting from .com, .net, etc. adult domains.
That said, regulating what is essentially a fuzzy rating on web content will be killed by lawsuits from the ACLU and other common sense indivuduals and organizations. But the fear factor alone will allow .xxx domain squatters to reap in some major bucks.
