Intelligence, genetic disease in Ashkenazi Jews linked

PROVO, Utah -- A University of Utah study of Ashkenazi Jews suggests an unusual link between their genetic diseases and their higher intellectual ability.

The study, to appear in Cambridge University's Journal of Biosocial Science, says this unusual pattern of diseases among the Ashkenazis of central and northern Europe is the result of natural selection for enhanced intellectual ability.


The study says the selective force was the restriction of Ashkenazim in medieval Europe to occupations that required more than usual mental agility, the New York Times reported Friday.

The study has received mixed reaction, with some scientists saying the finding is extremely implausible. Others say the researchers have made an interesting case.

The Utah researchers say Ashkenazic diseases like Tay-Sachs are a side effect of genes that promote intelligence. They say for some 900 years Jews in Europe were restricted to managerial occupations, which were intellectually demanding.

In the United States, Ashkenazi Jews make up 3 percent of the American population but have won 27 percent of its Nobel prizes. They also account for more than half of world chess champions.

This makes perfect sense -- it's not that the disease is related to any degree of intelligence -- or vice versa -- it's simply the inescapale genetic consquence of continuously (generation after generation) selecting within a breeding pool that is less open to the influx of new genetic material than average.

The nature of genes is such that when the material of a parent is given into the gamete (the egg or sperm with 50% of the total needed), the genes unravel in sections -- it's not like a bag of M&Ms - where you could pick out the gene for just this or just that single attribute.

As a result of the comparatively limited influx or genetic through-breeding, you will observe, after many, many generations the presence of common genetic "sections" in such a population. All this means is that they found genetic sections in the the subjects that contained both genes related to intelligence and genes related to certain diseases (which for the VERY SAME REASON) are now generally associated with Jews.

I guess I feel somewhat vindicated by this -- since this is exactly what I was trying to assert in my thread a while ago -- "Am I a JEW?"

Throughout history in old civilizations, societies would encourage jews in the communities to be in charge of jobs such as accounting and the like simply because they were good at it..

I dont think its a genetic thing they are born with, but perhaps more a cultural one where generations and generations have simply been pulled into these more cebral fields and as a result you get these kind of study results..

Same goes with blacks in this country.. On paper and these kind of studies they look horrible.. Im positive its not genetic.. But more of a generational cylcle of oppertunity and culture that provides us with these kind of reuslts on tests..

What im saying is i dont think people are born genetically into these kind of findings, but are born into the cultures that sculpt and evolve into these findings over generations and generations.

I am also 1/2 sephardic, Grandpa came from Rhodos - Greece.

Took my daughter there about 4 years ago, went into the old jewish section, was wierd to see a street named after our family.

Yea man it's crazy. My last name, Attias, we have a place in italy named after my ancestors for crazy successful traders in Italy.

Wow, very interesting, good read there :) Well my mom and her mom used to speak like Ladino when we were young so we couldn't understand them.

My Grandpa left Rhodos before the germans came and came to Seattle. Met my grandma and then had my mom, etc.

The temple in rhodes is like 1200 yrs old. The thousands of jews who left in the war, only 2 came back to live (those that survived), I met 1 of them. like 90 or so.

I will never forget that trip :)

It may also be due to the fact that Jews in the old time had to study a lot, especially religious study. So it helped us in secular studies as well. Same things go for Chinese and Japanese where education is a very important thing.

Nowadays however, we are witnessing a dumbening of the general population regardless of their race or religion.

Ladino cracks me up too... my father says some funny shit like hispanic words that normal spanish speakers don't understand. my favorite one is 'tavadierra' (butcherd the spelling) but it mainly means like a fiesty woman with a temper LOL. my family left Morroco (which is south of italy in africa) to mexico when ww2 broke out... then to New jersey, then back to mexico, then to san diego hehe...

in my biz history class covering 1880-1930 we learned that immigrant parents from some places stressed work while immigrant parents from other places stressed education.

i love politcally correct people who dismiss out of hand that there are biological differences in races of people. it's proven there are physical differences and those differences no doubt extend to the brain.
