Where to send updates for blogs?
 

I am curious I am working on a mainstream site, more of a blog than a place to sell something and am wondering which places I should put into wordpress, so that people are notified when our site is updated to bring traffic.

Any info you all can give me to bring traffic to this site would be great. It is for a local fire department. Just want people to visit the site, especially when its done sometime next week.

OK might be a stupid question, but do I have to signup for these? Does it take a while for them to show? I just did a ping from ping-o-matic and my site is not showing up on like weblogs.com and such.
