Advice and tips for developer / designer entering adult industry.

First off, a little background.

I have 7 years experience building websites and web based software. Went to college to get my bachelors in new media graphic design, but settled on an associates once I realized that college is worthless. When it comes to building sites, I am fluent from front to back, can pretty much do it all. At the moment, I work as a programmer, developing online inventory software for random businesses.

I'm looking to branch out into the adult industry, and am looking for advice from webmasters on what areas I should focus on, and what skills are in demand.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the show kid :thumbsup

Coming from someone in the same field you're looking to get into....I would say...if you want to have fun...go with the design...if you want to make money...go with the programming stuff...thats my :2 cents:

Any tips on building a portfolio in the adult industry?

I've spent the last few years amassing a huge amount of work to show for myself, but I have nothing pertaining to this industry.

Should I whore my skills at too-cheap prices to build a body of work, or just slowly put examples together as the rare job (without much of a portfolio) comes in?

Sorry to bother, just trying to feel things out before I compile an actual strategy.

My advice would be to put up a mainstream portfolio to gain jobs...then out of those jobs slowly build an adult portfolio. We're essentially a mainstream company but we do adult stuff and so we started with all mainstream stuff and then slowly build up adult portfolio. But we dont even show the adult portfolio on a website. Just give links when requested

1 - make a GPL / Free TGP script with automatic Thumbnailcreation
Make a Installscript to it, like most other big scripts (phpbb, mambo, ect.)
That way all newbies will use it.
The only way its free, is if they place one of your banners on the page.
The banner should be remoteley hosted by you, so you can push differnt content through the same bannerspace.
When they download the script, they should get a serialcode, that should be placed somewhere on the site. Make a script that checks every site, to se if the serial is there (and only used once) and check if the add is there.

Make a payed version that includes more features like partnerlogin, bannerrotation and shit

2 - get a portfolio - without you nothing.

3 - make a easy-to-install Blog

4 - Remember to make ALL work with php:mod_rewrite so it spits out SE freindly pages

That way you get exposure, and trafic = future customers and money

My advice is you should have gotten in 7 years ago. With all these new regs and more to surely come why anyone NEW would want to get in NOW is beyond me.

If you want to make any money... Design your own shit and program your own shit. That is what I do and I guarantee I make more than most who do one or the other for other people.

Thanks to all for the tips.

If anyone needs cheap, high-end design, let me know, as I am now in the process of building an adult portfolio.
