There's two ways of approaching buying a laptop:
1) Do you want a desktop replacement (in that case go to a retailer and buy a Toshiba, Apple or Sony preferably or a little down the line an HP or Compaq) 2) If you want a nice, light business laptop for travelling, buy an IBM or an Apple. They cost more for the features, but they're high quality. Personally, I'd forego the fancy 15" widescreens and go for a 14" laptop that has crappy video, crappy sound but is lighter. I've seen both business laptops and desktop replacements, and desktop replacements are too heavy to be truly portable. My two cents. |
A lot of these laptops by name brand companies are just rebranded. This means they're made by a company like CLEVO, but Dell or Acer or Alienware rebrand them. Some customize them a bit, and add their own warranties.
Sager is well known, and has a long time good reputation for notebooks. See here http://www.notebookforums.com/ |
I have a 3.2 ghz Dell XPS, 2 gig ram, 250 meg graphics card (Killer for games super fast on Halflife2 on full rez). Front side buss 800mhz(important). 60 gig 7200 rpm(important). Runs faster than any of my other 15+ office work encoding machines that are 2.8 ghz+. This thing kills anyneed for a desktop its basicly a LAN gaming machine but boy does it rock on encoding, graphics, super fast.
Can't say enough good things about it, its not a laptop to travel the world with as it weights 9 pounds or something but if your after something to take to the office in your breifcase and work on, then take home and work on its PERFECT. Alienware also have some nice machines, nicer looking cases too. A bit more expensive than Dell but not much. You can get 3.4ghz now too maybe more |
Ok...turning on all my messengers now. I'll catch you somewhere
|
go delllll
|
my main concern is quality ... ive been using dells, toshibas, but i always have this nagging fear the hard drive is going to take a shit so im always burning back ups - i travel all the time so i want a big screen, fast mofo, all the highest end shit ... i just want to make sure it is made of the most reliable parts. a warranty means squat to me when im in bum fuck europe or wherever the fuck ...
thanks for input, ill check out these links -any more comments appreciated :thumbsup |
Dell's Latitude (business line) is pretty well-built, I can't say the same for the Inspiron (consumer line).
Generally I find their image quality poorer than other brands' though. |
i bought samsung x 30 it rocks!

When it comes to laptops there really is only 1 choice, IBM's T series Thinkpad. Best damn laptop i have ever had, i get them cheap if you want one
|
I like Dell's laptops. I use last year's model, an Inspiron 8600 for daily use and video editing and it works great.

anything BUT Dell

check out a Sager, built like a beast and some models are meant to be desktop replacements. They are just like Alienware, except not the fancy ass case.
|
Dell currently has a deal $750 off a purchase of 1900+..I'm thinking about it but don't know which model to go for, I don't think that includes the XPS.
|
I have a Compaq Athlon-64 based system (widescreen), and it is excellent. Due to a power supply failure in my desktop, I just sat my laptop where my monitor used to, and its provided a good desktop replacement in the meantime :1orglaugh
