Poker... Don't call me lucky!

rant...

im getting tired of people telling me im just lucky because i win playing poker both offline and online...

I win a tournament.. people say it is luck...
I win a million bucks over the course of one year... still luck...
I go the the WSOP.. im still lucky....
I get a book deal... im still lucky.

I lose one game... proof it is luck....

I laugh when people tell that poker is just as random as the lottery!

It?s hard work. Gambling. Playing poker. Don?t let anyone tell you different. Think about what it?s like sitting at a poker table with people whose only goal is to cut your throat, take your money, and leave you out back talking to yourself about what went wrong inside. That probably sounds harsh. But that?s the way it is at the poker table. If you don?t believe me, then you?re the lamb that?s going off to the slaughter."

Sorry about the rant but im getting tired of the endless comments that is is all based on luck..

Poker is a game of skill. Yes luck is a factor like in everything else but lucky or not as a good player making a profit year after year is not that hard!

end rant!

Post inspired by a player going all in loosing to my four of a kind even after i told him I had it and telling me i was lucky LOL!

Poker is partially about luck . But I'd say it's 80 % skills . But when all the people arround the table have mad skills, it's more like 20 % about skills and 80 % about luck :)

The amount of Luck involved in ones poker game is directly perportional to the skill level in which they play. The more skill you have as a player the less Luck there seems to be involved. A-K suited 3 hands in a row can be called luck I suppose . Knowing how to play 6-8 suited in 4th posistion and winning is skill. When people tell you how lucky you are on a consistant basis, smile and be sure to save a seat for them on you immediate left at the table :thumbsup

Sam i dont flame:)

my point is as a skilled poker player it's like being the casino.. percentage is on your side in the long run (has been proven)

Dre: over time a skilled player has the house edge.... like it or not. Is the casino lucky?? Sure it is and sometimes it is unlucky.

I guess what my rant is all about is people that whiiiiiiiine when they call you with nothing and expects to win :)

Like in life.... there are a hell lot of whiiners at the tables HEHE

I find it funny. Like when you draw to 18 outs with a huge pot and hit on the river. Then they call you "river rat" or "fish". :1orglaugh

I've heard and read from many of the top pros that poker is about 75-80% skill and the rest is luck. Take for example last years world series of poker main event. Greg Raymer won and on his road to victory he called several big bets and all ins and in about half the cases he had the worst hand of the two and got lucky and outdrew his opponents. That's luck. But, figuring out how to get to the final table and putting yourself into position to be lucky is where the skill is. I saw a show were skalansy got pocket aces 3 times in the matter of about 15 hands. that's luck.

I've always thought the three biggest skills in poker is knowing how to read people, allowing yourself to be patient and wait for the good cards to come and understanding your odds.

The Truth Hurts 05-28-2005 11:06 AM

there's some luck, and some skill... i guess.

i came down to a heads up to a guy w few weeks back who had 20x the chips I did, and i took them all without looking at my cards once.

once you figure someone out, it's amazing how fast you can break them.

Yankee Scum 05-28-2005 11:10 AM

no doubt there is luck involved in getting the right cards.

playing in vegas no luck is needed.. .seriously find the right table and it is easy money.

The point im trying to make is that as a pro/skilled player you can be the "house edge"... sure you will lose sometimes but there is a reason why I see the same people year after year in the money at the tournaments i play around the world and you can bet that the reason is not luck!

sure you sit down at a table with casual players who think A-9 is a good hand and you can make some pretty easy money. In that case there is a lot less luck involved.

Yankee Scum 05-28-2005 11:13 AM

my next thread is so going to be about the bouys in vegas and their sunglasses at the tables muhahah :)

Correct sir!

To a point the same happens in tourneys... what people dont see at the televised events is the 3 days of bad poker from 70% of the players going all in with a6 and k-5 kinda hands.

GFED 05-28-2005 11:15 AM

I'm playing in the $1.5M tourny at Paradise right now... wish me luck... :)

yeah I was at a casino ( local here not in vegas ) a couple of weeks ago. I got pocket aces raised before the flop and got three callers ( was a little surprised by that because it was a pretty decent size raise. ) flop came down 2-7-J first guy bet second guy called and i went all in and the last guy folded. One of the other two guys folded and the other guy called me with a K-9 suited. Funny thing was he had no flush draw, no nothing, just thought his king high was good.
