Because custom scripts for blogging take little time to write and are infinitely more configurable than some prefabbed POS. I just haven't found anything out there that has perfectly fit my needs, so I wrote one.

has anyone developed an 'thumbnail creation' plugin for wordpress like the one in Comus Thumbs? that would make life much easier.

Wordpress is server intensive, it uses 18 sql database queries per page average. SE traffic will come no matter what blog software you use, homemade or prefab.

do I need all the features of wordpress?

no, so I don't bother coding them, nor do I want the overhead associated with them.

Wordpress has worked well for me over the last 2 years. Nice and simple and can't beat it for setup time.

There is better than wordpress, but I'm keepin' it quiet. I'm starting another blog soon that will be powered by it.

Not much other than it has lots of hype skins and toys to play with.

You can?t beat static front ends for high traffic blogs. The only thing that might warrant dynamic is the comments.

The biggest part is writing the back end but you could always rip it out of a free script and rewrite the front for static custom generation.

Movable Type is a good ready to go solution but this dblogger looks good too.

There are endless SEO tweaks you can make when in control of a static content generator.

If you dont go with a custom static solution or a static package you are fucking yourself if you ever get big.

Well Wordpress for instance uses approx 15-18 database calls PER PAGE. Multiply that times a couple hundred thousand pageviews per and you can see youll need a couple of servers or a really powerful one to run a single popular blog.

What's so good or bad about blogger.com then?

Blogger is a static solution. Remote administration and or various clients able to update it. Can be moved to new hosts quickly. Actually alot is erally good about blogger there just isnt alot in the way of customization other than raw templates.

Press the button for WordPress. All my blogs, both present and future are on it.

Yeah I agree with cambaby and he does know his shit. It took me a few days to drop the $200 on it but I just went with wordpress. Its a working script that is commercial and won't have problems with. Also it builds static pages. Though you can have it load dynamic pages.
