I think the Movie Theatre business is OWNED.

Even with a blockbuster like "Revenge of the Sith" the box office is still slumping.

I think the hot stuff to put in movies has burned out. The Lucas/Spielberg team are the only ones left as well as Peter Jackson who can pull in the huge numbers. Marvel heroes like Spider-Man were the new hope but with the next Spidey movie due out in 2 freakin' years it don't look good. The big budget monsters are going to have to fall on talent of the actors and not gimmicks anymore. Like 'Meet the Fockers'. It had people we love in it and that's why we went.

"War of the Worlds" is up in a month and that looks promising.

"Fantastic Four" I was hoping for but it looks stupid but then again the story and acting may be outstanding.

"King Kong" is up and of course the new 'X -Men' is due next year and a 'Wolverine' spinoff movie.

I dunno. Without a 'Star Wars' or 'Indiana Jones' movie in the future the box office looks bland. We need new Lucas' and Spielbergs.

Peter Jackson? What has he done besides Lord of the Rings that has pulled in huge numbers?

King Kong is done and will be released in Dec. Mark my words, it'll do huge numbers easily.

thats where movie theatres really make their $$$$........the concessions, not the movies.

And now they show advertisements at the start of the movie.

the new Batman is going to be damn good... looks very dark...

Schwick 05-25-2005 03:46 PM

Tough times for the theater owners indeed, however the movie business just keeps getting bigger and bigger. I spoke with a sales guy from Ingram Entertainment the other day and the number of DVDs a title will sell is C_R_AZ_Y

Drake 05-25-2005 04:02 PM

The movie business is a lot like the music business. Everything has been done...even the classic remakes have almost all been done too (Spiderman is not a 'new' creation, Indiana Jones and Star Wars are sequels/prequels to established franchises). King Kong, X men, these are all old stories being re-told. We've seen the best special effects so nothing really stands out in that department either.

going to see this one at IMAX :)

They need to open a little bit earlier with better movies. Get people excited and keep that momentum going. What is up with this House of Wax shit ? Please. I heard they ruined Hitchhiker, so no hurry to see that. " I'll wait for the DVD. " is what I hear in most cases. It's not worth the hassle of higher ticket prices and assholes with cellphones or crowded theaters unless it's FUCKING AWESOME anymore.

DVD sales continue to set record levels. My cable bill is around $160/mo.

The US Dollar blows. Gas prices are high, dragging the price of many other things higher along with it as transportation costs rise.

I'll wait for the DVD.

warlock5 05-25-2005 05:15 PM

Plenty of cult classics sucked at the box office. I'd rather watch a movie with a solid storyline and good actors than something with a big name and tons of SFX.

mrthumbs 05-25-2005 05:19 PM

We need GFY The Movie

mardigras 05-25-2005 05:34 PM

Brujah!!! How ya' doin'? Always the voice of wisdom round these parts.

You're right about DVD sales. The only reason to make a movie nowadays. Movies nowadays are commercials for the DVD.

People don't want to go to the movies because it's become a compounding inconvenience.

I was at the movies to see ROTS and the concession stand guy sold a guy a hot dog and forgot to put the hotdog IN the bun. So dude comes out to the stand and says like, " Dude! Like where's my weeny yo? "

We all cracked up!

Rotten parking, traffic jams, high priced food, gang members in the audience.... movies don't suck the movie theatres do.

There's the Arc Light here in Los Angeles. It's like going to the movies on the Starship Enterprise. Problem is it's expensive as heck! I went to a movie there a friend had produced. I had to buy a ticket and two hot dogs, medium popcorn and medium soda and it all came to $36!!!

That was AFTER the discount! I woulda gotten in free if I had met up with my pal but there was too much press in the way. Even then I would have spent close to $20 for food!

Crazy!

exactly.
now, times that by 2 (you & your friend/girlfriend/boyfriend), and theres at least $40 for under 2 hours of "fun".

fuck that shit.

Greg B 05-25-2005 08:38 PM

Everything's played out. The Marvel movies had alot of promise but they fucked up The Hulk, The Punisher, Daredevil, Electra.

The Hulk alone if they had done it right should have been the biggest blockbuster in movie history but some numbnuts figured to get 'psychological' with the story instead of it being the Hulk kickin' ass for 2 hours.

So what's left? There are video games that may have some promise but not like the comic book/superhero genre.

Superman and Batman are cool but they're so played out they have no more surprises left. How many ' dark vengeful warrior of the night 's can we take?

No, we need some NEW ideas from NEW creators. It's tough though because the comic book and movie companies won't let new shit out. ONly way to see the new stuff is to hit the independant comics and sci-fi sites on the web.

I would love to watch a Hulk movie, with a good storyline, but having the hulk kick ass for 2 hrs. as you say.

tony286 05-25-2005 09:18 PM

people rather watch them at home.I read a whole article about it.

You said it Banshee.

The Hulk is the most stress relieving character in Marvel Comics.

He just goes off when people piss him off and does billions of $$$ worth of damage and says cool shit like "Hulk smash!"

Hollywood didn't get it though. They decided to get artsy-fartsy and 'psychological' about the Hulk. Fucking intellectual wannabes fucking up my 'tain!

Meet The Fockers is the gayest movie ever made. And here's why. Ben Stiller can't act. He isn't funny, and his stupid face pisses me off

Have any of you thought of expanding your horizons to something that isnt american made?

Want to see a good action flick rent brotherhood of the wolf (french)

In 1765, King Louis XV assigns a scientist/soldier and his Native American companion to a case involving the mysterious slaughter of peasants in south France, which is attributed to a horrible monster.

Or for a good interesting drama:fairwell my concubine (chinese)

Two young boys form a life-long friendship while training for the Peking Opera. Their friendship spans five decades of Chinese social and cultural changes which are reflected in their relationship

dunefield 05-26-2005 09:15 AM

I think the best comic character to have a film would be thor... could you imagine the endless effects and storyline it can have...

chadglni 05-26-2005 09:20 AM

DVD's and football field size TV's. Who needs the fuckin theatre?

Tony Montana 05-26-2005 09:21 AM

I like the style of movies they had in the 80's. Ferris buelers day off, breakfast club, ect ect
Need more shit like that
Where there is actualy a story behind and dialog, not just action and special effects / killing

pradaboy 05-26-2005 09:26 AM

The new Star Wars movie shattered multiple records, best opening day $50 million alone... how is this slumping?

Rinaldo 05-26-2005 10:31 AM

Punisher blew balls too.

I liked kevin smith... he made movies with humor and no special effects, well until J and Silent Bob SB... which was just funny becuase it had all the old charecters in it not that it was a great standalone movie.

Independent films are teh way to go. shit I'd rather make someone with talent an extra 15 dollars watching their film then someone that won't notice the difference in their massive wallet. For instance, Ben affleck can't find anythign better to do with his money then to lose 1 million a weekend playing poker ( I saw him do it... he sucks btw)

While you've got people with talent that are still bartending in LA because the 150k they made for their first real film isn't enough to survive.
