If you have fake/hidden dns whois info...

...then how can the DOJ tell who owns the site? they contact the host?

BlueWire 05-24-2005 10:53 PM

Bingo...if you really really care about being secret than you host offshore :thumbsup

They'll contact your upstream provider for billing info, with a subpoena if necessary.

Move to http://www.havenco.com/ if you happen to be paranoid :winkwink:

what would be the use? if i LIVE in the u.s. i have to comply with u.s. law regardless of where my site is hosted.

Is it actually a legal requirement to fill in all the details of the domain owner?
Or aslong as they can contact you via one of the methods(email) is it ok?

If your DNS and hosting have been arranged by a provider who will not comply with subpoenas or requests for information, then you are effectively immune from anyone knowing. It would look a little something like this:

DOJ: Please present your real info.
You: Fuck off
DOJ: Host, please give us the contact info, under threat of US subpoena
Host: Fuck off

DOJ heads elsewhere for an easier target.

Its not a legal requirement for the international domains, however under ICANN rules you can lose your domain for intentionally falsifying information.

Certain countries have laws prohibiting misappropriation of domains with their country code.

It is illegal in the United States to falsify domain contact info to facilitate another crime.
