Will 2257 Force Us Back To "The Good Old Days"?
ok, I'm no lawyer, but at a glance it seems like making any kind of site/gallery with explicit content will become a chore of record keeping. Does this mean that the surfers are no longer going to find free porn content on the first page (or 25 pages) of a search?
I remember when you would throw up a banner to the paysite - and that would be the only image on your page - now you get a 50/50 change of a link to a TGP/MGP right in the top 5 results for a search (I'm not a bitter dinosaur, my company actually owns sites that match this scenario). Just thinking out loud - I mean, I doubt everyone is moving to Costa Rica just so they can sling porn. |
bump for this business thread

well, ya won't be able to throw up a banner if you don't want to act as custodian for the pics on the banner...
|
I think it simply means you'll have everyone going back to text based TGPs/MGPs using sponsor hosted galleries only. The days of the gallery submitter have been numbered for quite some time...this only speeds up the process. :2 cents:

but I am really not sure if we will see any significant change, remember, at least 50% webmasters live outside the US and they dont even know what 2257 is, nor will they care about it. |
Who is to say that gallery submitters are going to even comply? And if TGP doesn't require them to comply why would they?

But I expect Tony will be dreaming up a version of 2257 as we speak, "the Americans are doing it so it must be a good idea" |
[QUOTE=polish_aristocrat]banners can be hosted by sponsors[/qute]
Doesn't matter WHERE it's hosted it it is being "published" on your website. Quote:

To be honest I watched a few hundred websites drop because of the "proposed" 2257. Now thats its a law I would check all your fucking links cause the sheep will be dropping like flys..
Those that maintain and stand their ground will prevail. The others will all be flocking to Mc Donalds. |

dude, that's dumb. there are a lot of options out there besides porn and mcdonalds. and what exactly will you prevail upon?
there are site options for people who don't want to deal with the entire sexually explicit thing - like bikini models, vintage content, toon, stories, hot guys in underwear, pinup girls... just to name a few. Quote:

I wouldn't submit galleries without 2257 info. Just takes one person to be the example then I'd be intimidated. This is just going to cut the field down even more. But I seriously think you'll see Thumb TGP's drop like flies unless they are non-us based. |

We'll go back to the good old days of alot fewer webmasters competing for signups.....but we won't go back to the days of 10 pics max on a gallery and softcore only.
This will definitely thin the herd, but there are plenty of us with docs in hand ready to submit as many galleries as the TGP owners want to take the place of those who leave. Also, those of you who think that getting a server outside the U.S. or hotlinking images is going to save your ass are delusional. You really need to hire an attorney. :2 cents: |

exactly correct. thank goodness! |

Not sure if I can promote US sites with non compliant offshore gals though - That is the sort of detail we need. |

If I hotlinked every image and movie on my pages and hosted nothing myself but text it wouldn't exempt me from 2257. If I created and offshore corporation for all of my internet holdings yet still remained in America physically it wouldn't exempt me from 2257. |
Banners don't have to have photos on them.

hehe its hard to figure out still.
Currently im based outside us, hosting in us, and using billing thats outside us (maybe, ccbill eu)....and i´ve found like 10 different scenarios as to what its gonna mean, alot of guys here seem to have a clearcut interpretation (ranging from it means nothing, over move your server out of us, to you just cant escape it in any possible way). Anyway, suppose getting prepared isnt a bad idea. |

I didn't know that. :thumbsup |
New laws are stupid... they should try enforcing the original 2257 before they start ammending it.
