How old were you when you had your first artichoke?

I was visiting my father the other day and we had artichokes for dinner. He grew up in a small town in Minnesota and he was telling me that he had never had an artichoke til he moved out to LA when he was 25. I had my first one when i was 4-5....

..I think what age you had your first artichoke is a good indicator of where you grew up, what type of family (made ya try lots of different things versus hamburger helper and mac n cheese every night), and how picky of eater you were...

SO...when was your first artichoke?

Mr Dickovitch 05-23-2005 11:04 AM

Fuck you and your artichoke.

Honez 05-23-2005 11:08 AM

Libertine 05-23-2005 11:09 AM

Put some water..a little olive oil if you want in a pot..about an inch to inch and a half...put a steamer in is or i've found they actually are pretty good without the steamer in if you're working with not enough accessories.

So the next question is...what do you like for dip?

I prefer real mayo but whenever i've had them in restaurants its been a olive oil based dip. Some people like them plain as well. Any other dips?

american pervert 05-23-2005 12:05 PM

22, but we had them when we were growing up, I just never wanted one til I got older

Bugbee 05-23-2005 12:16 PM

3-4 always loved em in fact me and my girl had them last night. She likes melted butter with a ton of parmesean cheese I like mayo with a little lemon pepper, great shit!!!! I could have them again tonight!!!

mindoza 05-23-2005 12:33 PM

7...I use to go to my neighbors after school to play and her mom who was french(no idea if that has anything to do with it) use to feed us artichoke and some kind of dip/dressing. I loved it but when I stopped going there I stopped eating them...I do not think I ate one again until after college.

sickkittens 05-23-2005 12:36 PM

A thread about losing your artichoke virginity? Hmmmm.

MandyBlake 05-23-2005 12:57 PM

If it was in a salad...i would imagine it was canned artichoke hearts...I dont like those either. The real artichoke hearts are good i think but the leaves are the best part

LauraLee 05-23-2005 01:02 PM

i was young, not sure the exact age. i loved the whole process, pulling the leaves off, dipping, scraping the meat off.
i also enjoy cooking them. usually i steam them, cut in half, then broil with some olive oil, parmesan and italian bread crumbs.
damn, that sounds good.. think i will make them tonight.

tASSy 05-23-2005 01:03 PM

i grew up near half moon bay, california - they boast artichoke capitol of the world or something like that, so i definitely had my first 'choke as a young pup.

is this really important?
:1orglaugh

CS-Jay 05-23-2005 01:50 PM

Probably around 20's or so. I had them on some pizza, and they are sooo good like that.

tedwinters 05-23-2005 02:15 PM

Not sure how to break this to you, but real, "real mayo" is an olive-oil based recipe: basically olive oil, egg yolks, mustard, wine vinegar, water, lemon juice and seasoning.

Okay, okay I'm being a smart-ass and you probably meant dips with the oil still showing as it were, variations of vinaigrette. They will be the choice of most restaurants because that kind of dressing is more of a seasoning to enhance the flavor of the artichoke, while mayonnaise tends to dominate it. Artichokes are after all fairly expensive and troublesome if you want an excuse to dip mayo. Try quick frying some cubes of white bread in oil and garlic instead :)

Depends on where you live I guess, here I can buy 1 million bananas for 2 cents, but I have to pay about $3.00 for less than handful of cherries, in Europe is on the other way around.

I had my first artichoke when I was in my 20s, didn't like it much.

candyflip 05-23-2005 04:45 PM

I've been eating the marinated hearts since I had teeth. Must have had my first stuffed one soon after.

They're one of my dad's favorites.

pornguy 05-23-2005 04:46 PM

36 now, and still refuse to eat one.

tedwinters 05-23-2005 05:18 PM

I just dip 'em in melted lemon butter :)
just like lobster :)

DavieVegas 05-23-2005 06:59 PM

i hated them until i was 12 or so...my mother loves the heart of the artichoke and says its the best part but i like the leaves around it with salt :)

BV 05-23-2005 07:00 PM

Relish XXX 05-23-2005 07:06 PM

I actually dont think I have ever eaten one....oh well there is something for me to do tomorrow!

swedguy 05-23-2005 07:09 PM

I have no idea when it was. But I would guess when I was very young. Me and my sister were raised eating the same food as our parents. So we barely ate hot dogs, hamburgers and that kinda "kid" food when we were young.

Screaming 05-23-2005 07:10 PM

i never have

khs 05-23-2005 07:13 PM

does artichoke dip count?

Furious_Male 05-23-2005 07:24 PM

I was 4.5 years old. It was a Tuesday. 65 degrees F.. The wind was coming from the NE at around 4 MPH. It was a great day for eating artichokes.

Stamen 05-23-2005 07:41 PM

3-5 yrs. old

Vitasoy 05-23-2005 07:53 PM

I don't even think I had it before.

reynold 05-23-2005 08:27 PM

I still remeber it. It was a day after my 10th birthday.

Paraskass 05-23-2005 08:41 PM
