Anybody figure out this longhorn banner remover yet?

I posted a thread about this a month ago. I would search for it if it wasn't for the obvious.

My brother was beta testing Windows longhorn and the explorer was blocking banners.

For example I noticed that it was removing TGP image recip banners on galleries and those standard horizontal ones on top of the page like on GFY.

Anybody else notice this? If so figure out how to stop this?

When this Windows is released it's going to fuck with alot of webmasters.

Nothing will be fool proof, but to make things better... don't use banner folder names such as banners/ or ads/ etc. Name them something stupid like goodies/ or funstuff/ etc. Also, shit like this looks for ref codes and other php variables, so unless a sponsor has your ref code built into the links like a directory.. ie http://www.domain.com/pr-xxxx/... and instead links like http://www.domain.com/?wmid=xxxx&blah=xxxx&... you should run them through a click tracking script or simple php redirect... ie link to "sponsor.php" which contains the following: <?php header('Location: http://www.domain.com/?wmid=xxxx&blah=xxxx&... '); ?>

There is a huge database in windows that has a bunch of strings in it. I havebeen told it searches for things like "ad" "banner" "free" "?=" in string patterns and removes them from the browser.

This database can even be updated to add more strings.

The problem of using different names is that I already a million webpages on the internet that use some of these words and certain strings I can't change.

There has to be a better way to avoid it..

Longhorn is a M$ beta project.. I am hoping that they don't release it with this fucking thing.

How fucking retarded is this shit? How is it even legal for them to remove shit from peoples websites? Some people pay their bills on information sites with ad revenue and I can't see the government letting this fly.

For some reason I don't think that will happen. It would piss off a LOT of webmasters both mainstream and adult, it's just asking for a lawsuit.

Well it happening with beta longhorn.. lets just hope they wise up and don't release it like this.

But we have to remember M$ is notorious for fucking up entire buisness models and getting away with it.

I hope all mainstream and adult webmasters block longhorn users. That way surfers will know that if they buy longhorn, they cant surf the net.

Sounds like a solution to me.

kenny 05-21-2005 10:28 AM

What I don't get is why? Why are this doing this? How does it benifit them?

It's in the beta version so obviously they are thinking about it.

kenny 05-21-2005 10:31 AM

Longhorn is a cool windows though.. minus altering webpages

It's way different. Open windows flip around and you can make you desktop a 3D globe kind of thing.

Anybody else looked at the beta version?

kenny 05-21-2005 11:21 AM

Bump

damn it you can't tell me that I am the only guy who checked out longhorn to see what M$ is up to
