What ever happend to the search engine , Web Crawler?

When i first starting surfing the web way back when it was the most popular....

Now i'm surprised that there is still even a website up there...bad marketing? poor product? What happend to them...they were sitting on a gold mine and fucked it up somehow

BRISK 05-20-2005 05:24 PM

pornguy 05-20-2005 05:27 PM

Sosa 05-20-2005 05:36 PM

I always used altavista back in the day.

JSA Matt 05-20-2005 05:37 PM

BlueWire 05-20-2005 05:38 PM

apparently they were right :upsidedow

uno 05-20-2005 05:54 PM

Didn't AOL buy them? That would explain its decline.

Back in the mid 90's I used metacrawler!

TheSenator 05-20-2005 06:38 PM

Yeah, Web Crawler was the best during my college years 94-00

I remember hearing about Google from my librarian, had to be sophomore year. She thought she was THE SHIT knowing about this great new search engine that will change the Internet as we knew it. Guess she was right! Haha.

How about Excite?!

Jamie 05-20-2005 06:56 PM

webcrawler I believe was owned by go2net which got bought out by Infospace about 5 years ago.

INSP had a habit of ruining everything they touched

Jamie 05-20-2005 06:57 PM

Infoseek was the hottest SE back in the day

Instant inclusion after you submitted... god damn those were the days!

Coming back soon in the search engine near you!

webcrawler 05-20-2005 08:18 PM

Just checked it now : http://www.webcrawler.com/ and is still working fine.
Imagine being the top SE in the early 90s and now most people think it doesn't exist anymore.

NaughtyRob 05-20-2005 08:21 PM

I used HotBot for a long time.

Actually Webcrawler was bought by Excite, and they ran it into the ground.

Dalai lama 05-21-2005 02:28 AM

Use google.com :)

Hinc 05-21-2005 02:34 AM

altavista was my fav too....but webcrawler used to be quite competitive too, guess that stopped.

Violetta 05-21-2005 06:27 AM

I loved the webcrawler... used it all the time!

xxxice 05-21-2005 06:28 AM

Am I breaking any rule?

Brad Gosse 05-21-2005 07:08 AM

I remember using webcrawler in the mid 90's and it was THE search engine to be listed on.

I had my fist site listed on webcrawler and it made me lot's of cash.
