What ever happend to the search engine , Web Crawler?
 

When i first starting surfing the web way back when it was the most popular....

Now i'm surprised that there is still even a website up there...bad marketing? poor product? What happend to them...they were sitting on a gold mine and fucked it up somehow

I dont have usage statistics or anything...but all the school computers where i was had it as a start page...all my friends had it as theirs....it seemed to be THE SE

I use Altavista

I think that it was bought out. But not sure about that. Check google.

i remember it being the biggest also.. that and altavista... but webcrawler used to list the results really wierd... like the hun.. just a bunch of links and a SHORT description

Back in the mid 90's I used metacrawler!

Yeah, Web Crawler was the best during my college years 94-00

I was a hotbot person. I also used webcrawler and lycos.

I remember hearing about Google from my librarian, had to be sophomore year. She thought she was THE SHIT knowing about this great new search engine that will change the Internet as we knew it. Guess she was right! Haha.

How about Excite?!

webcrawler I believe was owned by go2net which got bought out by Infospace about 5 years ago.

INSP had a habit of ruining everything they touched

Infoseek was the hottest SE back in the day

Instant inclusion after you submitted... god damn those were the days!

Just checked it now : http://www.webcrawler.com/ and is still working fine.
Imagine being the top SE in the early 90s and now most people think it doesn't exist anymore.

I used HotBot for a long time.

Actually Webcrawler was bought by Excite, and they ran it into the ground.

altavista was my fav too....but webcrawler used to be quite competitive too, guess that stopped.

I loved the webcrawler... used it all the time!

I just thought about them recently. Someone on the board has that as a nickname. Maybe they know ?

I remember using webcrawler in the mid 90's and it was THE search engine to be listed on.

I had my fist site listed on webcrawler and it made me lot's of cash.
