Star Wars: The Triumph of Style over Substance

May the hype be with you...while the special effects of the Star Wars series have been great, the acting and stories have been atrocius.

I if I am not mistaken, the only actor/actress even nominated for an Academy Award in any of the five Star Wars films so far was Alec Guiness (for his supporting actor role as Obi-Wan Kenobi), and he lost.

The first Star Wars episode was also the only one of the series to be nominated for Best Picture - it also lost (to Woody Allen's Annie Hall).

I've heard exerts on the radio, and seen previews, and a twelve year old retarded kid with a gay priest's dick up his ass would of done a better job reading his lines.

The guy that played the Emperor deserves an Oscar nomination.

No fucking way.

Ewan McGregor did the only decent acting job in the whole lot. He rocked.

I agree, it was glaringly obvious how shitty a writer Lucas is during those "love" scenes.

But if you've watched the special features on the original trilogy DVD box set, there is an interview with Harrison Ford where he talks about George Lucas' impatience with the acting process, and really bringing out the performance. Lucas is the kinda guy that just says "the lines are on the paper, read them" and thats why the acting is so hammy.

That movie was a masterpiece compared to Episode 1 and 2. But it still sucked.

HpicAnn 05-20-2005 02:29 PM

man you guys are uber-hard on this movie! no it wasn't a masterpiece......it wasn't return of the king, shawshank redemption, or the godfather, but give the movie a break.....it was still a good movie worth seeing. i'm not denying there were problems with the script, especially the clunky love lines ("hold me like you did when we were on Naboo".......geesh george), or the worst omission, which was ben kenobi's understated reaction to the slaughter of the children (he should have been trembling or extremely upset when relaying this story).............but you can't deny the worlds Lucas has created have been fantastic.

the machinery in this, and the story, despite the holes (he turned to the darkside waaaaaaaaaaaay too fast) kept it from being a masterpiece, but i don't know if Lucas really has it in him to make one. How can you without getting the best of your actors, and he obviously doesn't.

that being said..........it was still good........it wasn't 'crap' like some on the boards have been saying.
